A federal agency has filed a lawsuit against Abercrombie & Fitch, claiming an 18-year-old woman who applied for a job at a California store was rejected because she wore a Muslim headscarf.
Attorneys for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed the lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, accusing the Ohio-based company of discriminating on the basis of religion.
The EEOC said the woman, whose name wasn't released, applied for a stocking position at an Abercrombie Kids store at the Great Mall in Milpitas in March 2008. She was wearing a colorful headscarf, or hijab, at the time.
The EEOC filed a similar lawsuit against the company last year in Tulsa, Okla.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that case is pending.
