White Christmas possible in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Dreams of a white Christmas in Oklahoma may come true this year.

The National Weather Service has issued winter weather watches and advisories for a storm system that could dump several inches of snow on the state by Friday.

It would be the first time in several years that snow might fall on or be on the ground Christmas Day in Oklahoma.

Gary McManus with the Oklahoma Climatological Survey said Wednesday statistics dating back to 1903 show that the northern one-third of Oklahoma has a 5 to 10 percent chance of seeing a white Christmas. The southern two-thirds, he said, has a less than a 5 percent chance.

McManus says that, because Oklahoma is located in the southern United States, it doesn't see much snow at Christmas.
