KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A convicted sex offender who fled northwest Missouri 33 years ago has been arrested in a small town in Oklahoma.
Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White says 71-year-old Berney V. Ferguson Jr. was arrested this week in Barnsdall, Okla. Ferguson was convicted in March 1977 of incest.
White says Ferguson changed his name and lived under the radar, sometimes in homeless shelters.
The Kansas City Star reports that jurors in Ferguson's 1977 trial recommended a sentence of two years. Ferguson did not show up for a sentencing hearing about a month after his conviction.
White says a felony conviction of incest in 1977 would have brought a sentence of no more than five years in prison.
