Hundreds of brightly-clad cyclists will conquer the heat while navigating the hills of eastern Norman on Saturday morning during the Bicycle League of Norman’s 17th annual Norman Conquest bicycle tour.
Riders will leave the J.D. McCarty Center, 2002 E. Robinson, at 7:30 a.m. on various routes in eastern and southeastern Cleveland County. Participants can choose from 10-, 22-, 46-, and 64-mile distances, depending on their ability.
The longer the route, the more difficult the ride will get, organizers say. Out-of-town riders quickly will discover that Cleveland County is not all flat.
“Last year we had a record number 650 riders from all over Oklahoma and six other states,” said Michelle Carr, the Norman Conquest committee chairwoman, “and that was with unusually hot temperatures. This year we hope to add riders with what looks to be more normal temps for this time of the year. This ride is great preparation for the “Hotter Than Hell” in Wichita Falls, Texas later in the summer.”
New this year is a free pasta dinner for riders wanting to add carbohydrates Friday night at O’Connell’s restaurant.
Proceeds from the ride will benefit the Camp ClapHans scholarship fund. The campsite is under construction.
Activities for children are scheduled, including horseback riding, arts and crafts, archery, canoeing and cooking. The residential summer camp is a project of the J.D. McCarty Center for Children with developmental disabilities. The pediatric rehab hospital specializes in complicated cases of developmental disabilities.
