Kyle Slader may only be fifteen years old, but his driving ability is far beyond his years.
Saturday night Slader won the Street Stock A feature and the Sportmod A feature at Thunderbird Speedway. He also took a special dash-for-cash that was a little different than most.
Gary Dilbeck of Tulsa came up with the idea of running a special race that put the sportmods against the super stocks. The super stocks have quite a bit more horsepower than the sportmods, but the sportmods are about 600 pounds lighter.
The race was lined up with the front row being two sportmods, the second row two super stocks, and so on. Four cars of each class started the race and at the finish it was Slader in his sportmod winning with the Super Stocks of Jason Sperry and Roy Cole chasing him but unable to close in on him.
The race was exiting for the fans and drivers.
“It amazes us every week of the support we get,” track manager Dennis slader said. “At the beginning of the night we didn’t have any dash for cashes planned and before the drivers meeting was over, we had local business owners in the pits and stands wanting to sponsor them. We had one in all four of our top divisions.”
Last week’s feature winner, Don Johnson, took the money in the Street Stock dash. Allen Chickering of Piedmont, who also won his feature last week, took home the money in the Modified dash.
After the excitement of the dashes, the first feature of the night was the Street Stocks. Slader started tailback but wouldn’t stay there long. He worked his way to second and began a battle with Dalton Ragsdale and Brian Folkner for the lead. Ragsdale, current points leader, also started in the rear of the field.
After Folkner suffered mechanical problems, Slader took the lead and stretched it to nearly a straight away over Ragdale by the end of the race.
“We tried hard but the car just wasn’t running right, the track was awsome and Kyle was just faster than us tonight.” Ragsdale said.
Next was the Sportmod feature in which Slader and Ragsdale both competed. The two had their sportmods waiting in the tech area and had to climb from one car and into the other.
Ragsdale, like Slader, is a youngster and just 17. The two raced go-karts together before moving to street stocks last year.
In the Sportmod feature, Ragdale would suffer engine problems but Slader would once again make his way to the front and take another victory. Terry Cook who lead most of the feature settled for second. The race for third wasn’t decided until the final turn with Bubby Morgan edging Matt Burnett.
The Super Stock race was perhaps one of the best races of the year. One fan stated “that super stock feature was worth my eight bucks.”
The first half of the race was plagued by four cautions, one for a spin by eventual-feature winner Jason Sperry. After spinning Sperry worked his way back to fourth with Roy Cole, John Stonecipher, and Dillon Rupe already in a heated battle for the lead.
First it was Stonecipher, then Cole, then Stonecipher when Sperry used the high side of the track to pass all three and take the lead coming off of turn four. Cole would run second, Rupe third, and Stoncipher would fade to fourth. Rupe has already secured the championship in the super stocks for the 2010 season.
The Modifieds added to what was already a great night of racing. Jared Havens jumped out to an early lead. Last week’s winner Allen Chickering was in second and Cole Berkinbile in third. On lap six, Berkinbile did the opposite of Sperry using the low groove to pass both Havens and Chickering to take command o the race. By lap ten, point leader Jeran Frailey would make his way to second and aim at the lead.
For the final ten laps, Berkinbile would stick to the low side while Frailey and Chickering would battle each other for the high side right on his rear bumper. That is how they would finsh with Frailey’s final push off of turn four for the checkered flag not enough to get him passed Berkinbile. Early race leader Havens came in fourth with Randy “Junk Yard Dog” Frailey rounding out the top five.
In the Strictly Stock class newcomer Steve Carey would claim the win with Alex Heimer in second, Alan Rainbolt third, and Tim Cline fourth.
Next week’s racing will return to 7:30 p.m. start time and there will be free snow cones for the kids.
