STILLWATER – The official push is on.
Oklahoma State officials launched a Weeden2Blackmon Facebook page and Twitter account less than two weeks ago. It already has more than 3,200 fans/followers.
The university will run Facebook/Twitter chats with OSU receiver Justin Blackmon and quarterback Brandon Weeden on Thursday and Friday. Blackmon will chat first at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Weeden will join the social media sites at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Fans can submit questions for either player by posting their questions to the wall of their official Facebook page – www.facebook.com/Weeden2Blackmon or send them via Twitter with the hashtag #W2B.
It is the first time OSU athletes have chatted with fans on a university-run social media site. Basketball players John Lucas and JamesOn Curry and football players Kendall Hunter and Blackmon have participated in national chats on ESPN.com.
The Facebook site, Twitter and chats are ways for OSU to promote the duo for national awards, including Heisman Trophy balloting.
Weeden and Blackmon are on the short list of preseason Heisman Trophy contenders. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is the preseason favorite.
“It is a way to start some momentum for the fall,” OSU associate athletic director/media relations Kevin Klintworth said. “Both of these student athletes have already thrown their hats into the awards ring with their 2010 performances.”
In 2010, Blackmon won the Biletnikoff Award as the best receiver in college football. He was a unanimous All-American and the first receiver to be picked as the Big 12 offensive player of the year.
His 1,782 receiving yards represent a new NCAA record for a sophomore and is the sixth best season in NCAA history. Blackmon also set an NCAA record by recording 100 receiving yards and at least one touchdown reception in 12 straight games.
Blackmon led the nation with an average of 148.5 receiving yards per game. He also led the country with 20 TD catches, was second with 9.3 catches per game and finished third in scoring (11 points per game).
Weeden became Oklahoma State’s first all-conference quarterback of the modern era. In his first year as a starter, the Edmond product set school records with 34 touchdown passes, 4,277 passing yards and 4,209 yards of total offense. He also holds four of the top seven passing games in school history, including a record 435 yards against Baylor. His 337 passing yards per game ranked third in the NCAA in 2010 and he finished fourth nationally in TD passes. His passing efficiency rating of 154.10 led the Big 12.
Oklahoma State starts the season against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 3 in Stillwater.
