No. 5 Broken Arrow shuts down Lady Roughers

— BROKEN ARROW — Coach Keith Coleman isn’t worried.

After his Muskogee Lady Roughers lost 2-0 to the Broken Arrow Lady Tigers, No. 5 in the Okrankings.com Class 6A poll, Monday, he’s not worried about the lack of offense. MHS only had three hits, a single each by Brook Hendrickson, Shaylee Rowland and Aubrey Johnson.

“Broken Arrow is obviously one of the better teams,” Coleman said. “We’re not going to panic. I know we’re going to be a good offensive team. We’ve got several kids who can swing the bat. We’ll be fine.”

Coleman’s squad, though, has been hampered by injuries. Shaylee Rowland and Carlee Gann have been slowed by ankle injuries.

“Shaylee’s one of the better hitters in fastptich and she’s not 100 percent,” he said. “Carlee is Paige’s younger sister and she batted well in the middle of our lineup all summer, but she’s been limited to just a couple of pinch hits. I expect them to be back by Thursday and this weekend.”

Paige Gann pitched a complete game, striking out two batters and scattering six hits.

The Lady Roughers, 2-4 for the season and ranked No. 9 in Class 6A, stranded six runners in the game, three of those in scoring position and two of those at third base. They had a runner thrown out at third base in the first inning.

Monday was the season opener for the Lady Tigers. Elena Gambill retired eight straight batters at one point, including striking out three. She had five strikeouts in the game.

Coleman has been pleased with his team’s defense in the early part of this season.

“We’ve been pretty good in our last three outings,” he said.

For Broken Arrow, left fielder Hannah Smith had two hits. The Lady Tigers’ runs came in the second and fifth innings.

Hanna Heinrichs tripled in the second and scored on Paige Gann’s wild pitch. In the fifth, Keyleigh doubled and scored on Blayke McKissic’s groundout.

Muskogee returns to action at 5 p.m. Thursday at Bixby. The Lady Roughers return to Broken Arrow on Friday to play in a tournament that continues through Saturday.
