Lightning halts MHS-Owasso

— Lightning stopped Muskogee’s game against Owasso with 7:16 left in the second quarter, leaving the Roughers with a quick, wet — and ultimately meaningless — 28-0 loss.

The contest was ruled a no-game, meaning it won’t count in the standings.

In the end, that was the only thing that could stop the Rams.

Owasso piled up yard after yard rushing against the Roughers’ defense before the rains came, a torrent of  yardage before the deluge of rain.

“Owasso is going to run the ball well,” Muskogee coach Josh Blankenship said. “They’re going to do everything well. They’ve been a semifinals team the last several years.

The Rams totaled 147 yards on the ground in less than a quarter-and-a-half. And though Muskogee’s offense, particularly senior quarterback Trevor Jiles, played valiantly, MHS couldn’t climb out of an early hole.

In fact, thanks to the weather, they didn’t get a chance to.

“That’s what’s disappointing,” Blankenship said. “We’ve got so many young kids that need reps against a team like this. That’s the only way we’re going to get better.

“Personally, I would have waited three hours to play. I didn’t care if we were getting beat 60-0, we need more reps.”

Jiles finished the abbreviated game completing 6 of 10 passes for 65 yards, but it could have been more. He just missed tight end Jefferson Moore (2 catches, 38 yards) on a wide open play in the first quarter when Moore left his feet early instead of running under the pass.

And in the second quarter, with gusting winds, he overthrew Ja’rod Jones deep down the left sideline. Without the wind, it could have been completion and a long touchdown.

“Trevor is playing at a high level right now,” Blankenship said. “It’s a shame he’s not getting the production he deserves because some other players aren’t playing at his level.”

Muskogee (0-1) took the opening kickoff, and, into a strong wind, punted after three plays. Three plays later, Owasso quarterback Jaylen Lowe punched in a one-yard touchdown dive to make it 7-0.

Muskogee’s next possession stalled, and, again, Owasso scored quickly. The Rams (1-0) needed just a handful of plays before Lowe scored on a 25-yard scamper into the end zone. The senior quarterback escaped a group of MHS defenders, raced up the left sideline and reached the ball just past the end zone line with his left hand while being dragged out of bounds.

Owasso scored on their next possession, too. And the one after that.

You get the idea.

The Rougher offense battled. But too often, MHS would fight to inch its way up the field, only to see their drive die due to a familiar foe — penalties.

In fact, Muskogee’s best scoring chance of the game, a wind-aided 47-yard field goal attempt by Preston Soper, ended up being a 52-yard attempt thanks to a false start.

Soper had enough leg for the kick, but missed it wide.

Muskogee faces another tough challenge next week when it travels to defending Class 7A Arkansas state champion Fayetteville on Friday.
