Wagoner rebounds with shutout of Pryor

— WAGONER — It was thunder and lightning all night at W.L. Odom stadium — with the Bulldog defense providing the thunder and the offense providing the lightning — as the Bulldogs ripped visiting Pryor, 34-0.

Defending 4A state champion Bulldogs shook off the opening week loss to last week to a pride of Tigers and after a 45 minute delay in the second quarter.

Lawrence Evitt led the Bulldogs offense with 232 yards rushing and Kerwin Thomas added 129 all-purpose in the win as the two provided the lighting. The defense held the visiting Tigers to just 18 yards rushing, five first downs and 97 yards passing on the night.

“Our offensive line did a tremendous job tonight,” Wagoner coach Dale Condict said. “It felt good running the ball. We had some intensity when we came back after the delay and then rode Evitt all night long.”

The Bulldogs offense struck first when Decrious Clark found Thomas down the sideline for a 7-0 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter. It came after two scores were negated, one by penalty and another when Evitt stepped out at the six yard line, ending in a missed field goal.

“We had a few mishaps and didn’t have our intensity early in the game,” Condict said. “It took a few minutes for us to get going.”

As the Bulldog offense looked to get on track the defense held the Tigers offense in check in the first quarter, allowing nine total yards and one first down in the first 12 minutes the Bulldogs began to find their rhythm behind Clark, Thomas, Evitt and T.J. Ponds running the ball.

With 9:41 to go before the half, Evitt dove in from the one for the Bulldogs second score and a 13-0 lead.

When the Tigers’ offense looked incapable of moving the ball, Keegan Yates found Carson Smallwood open in the middle of the field for a 67 catch and run to the Bulldogs 3. But Wagoner wouldn’t let a score come easy. As Yates dove over with the quarterback sneak, Denton Bosco slapped the ball out of his hands then recovered to stave off the score.

“Smallwood is a special player and for our guys to hold him in check and battle with their big guys I thought we did a great job,” Condict said.

Seconds from halftime, a pair of interceptions gave the remaining crowd some excitement — an interception return by the Tigers to the Wagoner 38. Then on the next play, the Bulldogs returned the favor as Thomas picked off Yates at the goal line, returning it to the Tiger 30 as time expired.

Evitt sprinted in from 11 yards out with 2:27 to go in the third quarter to give the Bulldogs a 27-0 lead.

Clark and Thomas put a stamp on the late night as they connected in the left flat for a 35 yard touchdown pass with 1:00 to gone in the final quarter to give the final on the night.
