Tigers lick wounds: Fort Gibson bounces back from loss in romp over Wagoner

FORT GIBSON — Bouncing back was important to Jordan London and the Fort Gibson boys basketball team on Friday night.

After losing 68-64 to Stilwell on Thursday, London and the Tigers had scoring runs of 10-2 in the second quarter and 12-0 in the third quarter en route to pounding the Wagoner Bulldogs 71-44 in Class 4A Area IV consolation semifinals at Harrison Field House.

“It was a good team win,” London said. “Getting this win was big. We want to make it to the area round.”

London did his part, scoring four points in each run and finished with a game-high 29 points as the Tigers improved to 21-4 going into today’s 3 p.m. game against Inola in the consolation finals at Fort Gibson.

Fort Gibson broke open a 21-20 lead to a 31-22 advantage after the second period run. After  the third period run, the Tigers led 43-36.

The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 20-6 in the third period.

Fort Gibson coach Gary Hendrix didn’t have any big pregame speeches about bouncing back.

“You talk about it, but they know that you can’t do anything about the game we lost,” he said. “You’ve got to get focused on the next game. You got to win one game at a time and we were fortunate to win this one. We’ll have to turn around without much rest and play again.”

Jordan Hill added 15 points for the Tigers. Ned Adair had eight rebounds and Zack Lindley added seven.

Wagoner, ending its season at 10-16, didn’t have any players score in double figures. Lateze Clayton and Garrett Jacobson had eight points each, while Ya’quoob King, Kerwin Thomas and Decarius Clark had six each. King also had eight rebounds.

“We didn’t do the little things right,” Wagoner coach Jason Giddens said. “We turned it over and lost our composure a little bit.”

Today’s game is likely to be emotional as Inola head coach Clyde Barkley will be going against Fort Gibson assistant coach Todd Dickerson, his son-in-law.

“Gary is also one of my best friends,” Barkley said. “We’ve got to play Fort Gibson here and it’s going to take a great, great effort to be in the game with them. I hope we come to play.”
