FOOTBALL
Coach: Ron Lancaster, Muskogee
Brought the program back to prominence in 2003-05, making the state semifinals where MHS lost a controversial semifinal game against Mustang. Led Sallisaw to the state finals twice, in 2001 and 2002, losing to Clinton.
OFFENSE
QB: Nathan Stanley, Sequoyah
Threw for 2,153 yards and 32 TDs his senior season; signed with Mississippi.
RB: Tray Bowie, Eufaula
2,295 yards and 32 touchdowns as a junior; 1,668 rushing and 26 TDs as a senior in 2004. Went on to UCO. A two-time winner of the Phoenix’s Male Athlete of the Year.
RB: Vfastv Locust, Vian
One of state’s most prolific backs in history, rushing for 2,578 yards as a junior in 2005 and for the year, totaled a state record 51 rushing and 57 all-purpose touchdowns. Had 1,137 yards on 112 carries in eight games his senior year.
RB: Pete Richardson, Muskogee
Missed five games as a senior in 2004 and still rushed for 926 yards and 15 TDs. Went on to Texas Tech and finished his playing career at Harding. Had over 1,300 yards as a sophomore and junior.
WR: Jameel Owens, Muskogee
A four-year member of the All-Phoenix team, the only such person this decade with that honor. He totaled 2,948 yards receiving in his career, was selected to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and signed with Oklahoma in Feb. 2008. Announced this month he was leaving that program to enroll at Tulsa.
WR: Jermaine Sherman, Wagoner
Had 44 receptions for 896 yards as a senior, scoring 15 TDs in 2007.
TE: Derek Fine, Sallisaw
Had 798 yards on 34 catches, best among 4A receivers, and scored 8 TDs as a senior in 2001. Went on to a successful career at Kansas.
OL: Kellen Davis, Stigler
Followed up HS career that ended in 2000 with four years at OSU, eventually starting there.
OL: Scott Hood, Midway
6-3, 280-pound center never had a bad snap in the Chargers’ shotgun formation and graded out at 88 percent in 2004.
OL: Nick Christie, Vian
Three year starter who graduated in 2007 and key part of a line whose offensive averaged over 50 points a game over three seasons.
OL: James Bell, Sallisaw
Tremendous blocker on Ron Lancaster’s last team in 2002 and again in 2003.
OL: Jeff Walker, Fort Gibson
Graded out 95 percent his senior year but here’s the key to this selection: His brother David, a 4A-4 offensive lineman of the year in 2001 who walked on at Oklahoma, said his brother was the better offensive lineman.
K: Chris Peoples, Vian
Two-time All-Phoenix selection as a sophomore in 2007 and senior in 2009, booting 139 of 157 extra points and 14-of-25 on field goals. He also averaged 41 yards per punt.
DEFENSE
DL: Stacy McGee, Muskogee
98 tackles, 20 for losses, forced 18 passes and intercepted two as a lineman his senior season in 2008. Wound up with six sacks. Was the No. 2 state recruit behind Owens in some lists and wound up at Oklahoma, where he remains as a redshirt freshman.
DL: Derek Burton, Muskogee
239 tackles, 122 solos in two years (2004 and 2005) with 24 sacks. Went on to a four-year career with Oklahoma State.
DL: Dane Crumb, Vian
36 sacks in two seasons, 2001 and 2002.
DL: Charley Brown, HIlldale
A two-time All-Phoenix Defensive Player of the Year in 2003-04. Made 229 tackles inlcluding 62 solos. Also had 12 sacks, 36 quarterback hurries, 15 tackles for a loss, two fumble recoveries, two caused fumbles and two pass knockdowns. Signed with University of North Texas after graduating.
LB: Zack Wallace, Hilldale
Ten sacks as a senior in 2007 with 136 tackles. His career ended prematurely with a back injury at Tulsa.
LB: Gus Jones, Wagoner
279 tackles in two years including 168 and five sacks as a junior. Signed with Oklahoma and left at the end of this season.
LB: Erik Howell, Muskogee
Two-time member of the All-Phoenix team in 2007 and 2008. Was the District 6A-3 player of the year as a senior. Had 144 tackles, 92 solo, with four pass deflections. He signed with East Central back in February.
LB: Josh Luna, Eufaula
The 2001 Phoenix Defensive Player of the Year recorded 125 tackles and five sacks on the way to a 2A semifinal loss to Cascia Hall. He was second in tackles his junior year to co-team member Avery Shine.
DB:Avery Shine, Eufaula
Former Eufaula coach Kerry Roberts named the 2000 Phoenix Defensive Player of the Year who had 131 tackles “the best player he’s had in 30 years of coaching.” Shine was at Oklahoma for one season.
DB: Clint Rountree, Tahlequah
Standout career with the Tigers landed him at Tulsa in 2001.
DB: Aaron Thrall, Midway
As a senior in 2004, had 123 tackles, nine interceptions and caused eight fumbles, returning five for 79 yards.
DB: Durell Parker, Wagoner
Three-year starter, on defense at strong safety had 163 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, caused 5 fumbles, recovered 6 fumbles, 2 INT's, had 6 sacks, scored 1 TD.
ATHLETE: Rell Lewis, Muskogee
2,800 yards of offense as a junior, 1,600 in a senior year plagued by injuries. He landed at Kansas. Also a primary return man for Muskogee — ironically, the job he had when he suffered a knee injury in his senior season in 2006.

BOYS

Got to four state finals in the decade and won in 2003.
C Matt Qualls, Tahlequah
Averaged a double-double for his career and in all four seasons, including a 5A semifinal season as a senior in 2009. Playing at UCO.
G: Dominique Gaines, Muskogee.
Two-time All-Phoenix selection in 2005 and 2006, finished career with 22.1 scoring average his senior season with one blocked shot per contest. Signed with Oral Roberts out of high school but played at Northeastern A&M.;
G/F Ryan Keese, Fort Gibson
Two-time All-Phoenix MVP in 2007 and 2008, averaging 23 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3 steals 3 assists pver the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.
F: Solomon HorseChief, Sequoyah
Instrumental in leading the Indians to the 2003 state championship in Class 3A and putting the Indians on the basketball map for the rest of the decade.
F: Jesse Scroggins, Fort Gibson
Averaged 17.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game with 2.3 assists. Co-player of the year in Three Rivers Conference
Sixth man: G: Kaben Smallwood, Hilldale
Averaged 19 points per game in his prep career and scored more than 1,000 points in his career. He’s the school’s all-time assists leader who graduated in 2002.
GIRLS
Coach: Bill Nobles, Sequoyah
His direction made Sequoyah become the sixth team since OSSAA records began in 1919 that won three straight girls state championships, coming within a hair of winning an unprecedented fourth in 2008.
G: Angel Goodrich, Sequoyah
Four-time All-Phoenix MVP from 2005-2008. She scored 2,122 career points, ranking in the Top 20 on the state’s all-time list, and guided the Lady Indians to three straight Class 3A state championships and a 107-7 record in her four years there.
C: Kendra Dean, Fort Gibson
Four-time All-Phoenix selection and arguably the second-best player in the area each of those yearsw behind the previously mentioned player.
G: Katie Needham, Oktaha
Leader and court quarterback on the Lady Tigers’ 2005 state championship team in Class 2A. Was the Small School Player of the Year that year and in 2004, averaging seven assists in addition to 14.1 points in her final season.
F: Andrea Oldham, Stigler
Averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds in being the Phoenix Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002, the last year helping her team to a state championship.
F: Verressa Gaston, Fort Gibson
Averaged a double-double her career at Fort Gibson and went on to play at Northeastern State.
Sixth girl: G: Jamillah Reed, Okay
Led the area three straight years in scoring. Averaged 24 points per game in becoming the Small School Player of the Year in 2003.
BASEBALL
Coach: Chris Burt, Oktaha
Had 10 state appearances — five in the fall and five in the spring — during the decade and won a state championship this fall. Had a 494-183 record in the decade.
P: Joe Liles, Hilldale
The ace of Hilldale’s staff in 2004 in a run to the Class 4A championship game. His 12-3 record (24-4 over two seasons) included two wins at state in 2004, three saves and a 1.94 ERA. He struck out more than 100 batters as a junior and senior.
P: Trevor Walch, Eufaula
A two-time All-Phoenix selection which culminated a senior season in which he was 5-4 on the mound with an ERA of 2.49 and struck out 86 batters in 60 innings. Also hit .421 with 11 doubles, five triples and ninehom runs.
P: Cale Elam, Oktaha
Shortstop/pitcher was the Phoenix’s MVP in 2009. He had 11 home runs last season along with 10 doubles and 46 RBIs. Has signed with Wichita State.
P: Jerry Morris, Vian
Two-time Phoenix MVP in 2004-05 with a senior season that including hitting .433 with 10 home runs, 42 RBIs and 28 run scored. Also had a 15-2 pitching record with a 1.28 and 141 strikeouts in 93 innings as a junior.
P: Nathan Parker, Fort Gibson
The Phoenix selection in 2004 had 126 strikeouts in 75 innings in finishing 7-4 n the mound and an ERA of 2.14. Also signed with Arkansas after graduating.
P: Josh Neal, Haskell
Effective at the plate and on the mound in being named All-Phoenix in 2004. Had 8-1 record with 1.02 ERA and two saves. Also struck out 132 batters in 68 innings. As a hitter, he hit .441 with 12 doubles, 32 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Signed with Oklahoma State after graduating.
C: Jeff Breedlove, Hilldale
Breedlove threw at Hilldale, the No. 2 hurler behind Liles during Hilldale’s 2004 run to the state finals. But his catching prowess was a step ahead — though obviously not now as he’s in the Seattle Mariners organization. Hit 18 home runs as a junior, 13 as a senior and averaged over .400 at the plate those two seasons.
IF: Beau Sheffield, Gore
First baseman was the All-Phoenix MVP in 2003 when he hit .486 with 19 HRs and drove in 60 runs.
IF: Buck Shaw, Wagoner
A 38th round draft pick out of high school at Wagoner in 2002. He averaged .400 at the plate his career. Would play at Connors and was drafted by Philadelphia, where he spent two seasons in the minors.
IF: Tyler Johnson, Haskell
Had career-high batting average of 661 with 11 HR and 66 RBIs in 2003, was hurt in 2004. Spent five seasons in the Los Angeles Angels’ organization.
IF: Londell Taylor, Vian
Outstanding career as Wolverine; hit .540 with 28 extra-base hits in 2007. Turned down football scholarship to OU to sign with the Detroit Tigers organization.
OF: Dustin Dailey, Muskogee
His .460 average as a senior in 2003 included 12 doubles and 20 stolen bases. He was an ace at Connors and then OSU.
OF: Tyrell Cummings, Muskogee
Named all-state, all-region, all-conference, Junior Sunbelt and Green County Player of the Year after batting .461 with eight home runs as a senior. Went on to Seminole and then Southeast Missouri State where he was a first-team conference player in 2009.
OF: John Coker, Muskogee
Standout outfielder in 2001 who was drafted in the 37th round of the 2001 draft that season by San Diego. Played at Seminole State and Louisiana Lafayette.
UTILITY: OF: Wes Newman. Muskogee
Hit .448 with 18 doubles, six home runs and 32 RBIs in a state tournament run in 2009
SPECIALIST: Jeremy Thompson, Warner
Speed-demon shortstop in the early part of the decade for the Eagles. Averaged 30 stolen bases a season over his four-year career.
SOFTBALL (Fastpitch and slowpitch)
Coach: Ronnie Rogers, Tahlequah
Won two state slowpitch championships in the decade, 2004 and 2006.
P: Summer Brown, Eufaula
Large School fastpitch MVP in 2004 with 25-11 record, 292 strikeouts in 102 innings. She also hit .454 that year.
P: Cassidi Wood, Oktaha
The Lady Tigers’ first fastpitch all-stater in 2002. Compiled 77-35 record with 310 strikeouts and 1.12 earned run average in her career. Also drove in 155 runs in fthree years. The daughter of retired coach Darrell Wood also struck out just once in three season.
P: Taylor Mills, Fort Gibson
Three-time All-Phoenix fastpitch pitcher got selected as a third baseman in her junior year due to injury. Signed with Austin Peay after a senior fastpitch season in which she was 16--5 in the circle, struck out 198 batters and walked 83 in 152.3 innings.
P: Chrystal Adair, Hilldale
Hit .493 as a junior and .514 as a senior in slowpitch, while batting .431 as a junior and .394 as a senior in fastpitch. Also struck out 437 batters in 233 innings over two seasons.
C: Mary Barrow, Hilldale
Chosen to the all-state fastpitch team in 2000 as a catcher. Hit .400 that season for the Lady Hornets.
INF: Lindsey Abbott, Muskogee
Went to OU and then transferred to Wichita State, Played on 2000 slowptich state title team. MHS assistant Hal Sands said she was the best he’d ever seen at MHS.
INF: Evan Sallis, Muskogee
Hit a career-high .477 in fastpitch her senior season in 2007, stealing 18 bases. then signed with Oklahoma.
INF: Lorin Hammer, Sequoyah
Hit .483 with 44 RBIs, drew 11 walks and stole 10 bases as a senior.
INF: Jill Flusche, Oktaha
Hit .519 with 35 RBIs and 30 stolen bases as a freshman in 2004 fastpitch..All-Phoenix selection the next three years as well, and .448 as a junior
INF: Shelbi Bowin, Tahlequah
Slugged 16 home runs as a junior, while hitting .604 with 62 RBIs, 10 doubles and a slugging percentage of 1.000 in slowpitch.
INF: Hayley Jaynes, Fort Gibson
A versatile player who excelled in pitching with a 12-2 record and 1.08 earned run aveage with 84 innings and 69 strikeouts in 2008 fastpitch. Also hit .380 with 32 RBIs, 20 runs, eight doubles, four triples and three home runs.
INF: Hannah Hamilton, Muskogee
Made quite a showing in slowpitch for three seasons that included hitting .606 with 57 runs scored, 42 RBIS , 16 doubles, 13 triples and six home runs as a junior.
INF: Rachel Criner, Haskell
Hit .564 with seven home runs, 41 runs scored and drove in 52 RBIs in her junior fastpitch.
OF: Whitney Kirkpatrick, Tahlequah
.500 BA as a senior, .982 FP in slowpitch.
OF: Madison Reed, Muskogee
Played outfield and then moved to catcher in her senior fastpitch season and hit .413 with seven doubles, 34 of 38 stolen bases in 2009.
OF: Brennan Miller, Fort Gibson
Hit .477 with 26 RBIs, 41 runs, 6 2Bs, 3B, 3 HR, 15 stolen bases and fielding percentage of .933 in senior fastpitch season.
OF: Paige Boling, Hilldale
A four-time selection on the Phoenix fastpitch team. As a senior, he hit .414 in 94 at-bats with nine doubles, 14 walks and also had a fielidng percentage of 1.000.
DH, slowpitch: Kera Smith, Gore.
Hit .685 as a junior in 2008 before being named All-Phoenix Most Valuable Player in 2009.
VOLLEYBALL
Bettina Gutierrez, Okay
Part of the 1997 state championship team and graduated in 2000 as all-state.
SOCCER
Jerrard Garroutte, Fort Gibson and Brennan Miller, Fort Gibson
Garroutte was the top scorer for the Tigers in 2006 with 17 goals and Miller was a two-time All-Phoenix Player of the Year.
Josh Garroutte, Fort Gibson
Garroutte had 25 goals and 12 assists in 2004. He was second in the state (all classes) and top-10 in assists.
WRESTLING
Stacy McGee, Muskogee
State heavyweight champion his senior year in 2008.
CROSS COUNTRY
Sarah Holcomb, Sequoyah and Brian Gosnell, Tahlequah
Gosnell was state champion in 5A in 2003. Holcomb was a 2A state champion in 2004.
TRACK
Kim Ford, Wagoner
Junior year was her best with a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash, a fifth in the 100 and ran the anchor legs on the fourth-place 400 relay and fifth-place 800 relay at the state meet.
Tray Bowie, Eufaula
State long jump champion his junior year in 2004 and again in 2005, when he broke the 24-year-old 4A state meet record of 23-5 that Marlow's Joe Dial set in 1981.
GOLF
Raelynn Farthing, Hilldale
Helped the Lady Hornets to the Class 4A state championship in her junior year and followed that up with a two-round socre of 157 to place fifth individually and Hilldale second overall at state as a senior. Also had 78.1 stropke aferage and earned all-state honors as a senior.
Trent Whitekiller, Sallisaw
Won the Class 4A state championship in 2004 and again in 2005.
TENNIS
Logan Buck, Tahlequah
A two-time state finalist and won the championship in 2005, beating Union’s Eric West in the finals. Ironically, Buck lost to West in the 2006 finals.
SWIMMING
Carly Miller, Fort Gibson
Four-time state champion, winning three 50-yard freestyle events and one 500 freestyle. That year, she was runner-up in the 50 as a junior. She had four individual silvers in her career and set a state record in winning the 50 freestyle her senior year. Went on to a successful college career at Rice and qualified for the 2008 Olympic trials.
