FORT GIBSON — The Morrales brothers of the Eufaula Boxing Club swept to victory at the Oklahoma Silver Gloves competition at Hooligan’s Boxing Club on Saturday night.
Aaron, Martin and Fabian won their bouts on a 12-bout card. The trio and the other winners now advance to regional Silver Glove competition at Little Rock, Ark., in mid-January.
Aaron won at 75 pounds, Martin took his first place in 139 pounds and Fabian was the winner at 95 pounds. Their victories enabled the Eufaula Boxing Club to take the trophy for top team in the one-night competition sponsored by Ringside, Inc., and sanctioned by the Oklahoma Association of USA Boxing.
Hooligan’s, though, was not shut out.
Three of their boxers won titles and will advance to silver regionals.
Tyler Curry won at 119 points and was awarded the winner of the Fighter of the Night. He received a two-foot trophy for his efforts.
Other Hooligan’s boxers who won bouts were Jordan Galvan at 98 pounds and Kyle Curry at 85 pounds. The Currys also are brothers.
The other individual award winner was Wetumka’s Bo Gibbs in taking the Outstanding Bout of the Night. Gibbs won at 165 pounds.
The individual awards were judged by voting by referees and ring officials.
Silver Gloves is opening to amateur boxers between the ages of 10-15 years old. Silver Gloves is not the Golden Gloves tournament and that’s open to boxers 16 years old and older.
Tyrel Brown, operator of Hooligan’s, located at 11-3 East Poplar, and a Fort Gibson native, was the tournament director for Saturday’s competition. Brown won Toughman championship in 2004 and 2005 and won his first professional fight at 169 pounds in 2007. He’s 4-1 as a pro and 6-1 in Mixed Martial Arts.
