MHS strong in opening season

By Mike Kays

With his college plans settled, you’d think the only load on Quincy Mondaine’s shoulders when he hits the wrestling mat is his opponent.

Not so, not at any time during a four-match sweep at Saturday’s Charles Garrett Open and not anytime over the next three to four months.

Mondaine, who verbally committed to the University of Oklahoma a few weeks ago, finished off his day with a pin of John Ballard of Hulbert in 1:26 of his 215-pound championship match, said that decision weighs heavy on him every time out.

“It increases the pressure on me,” he said. “Every time out I want to impress OU. I’m out here to work hard and get better with every match.”

It was Mondaine’s third pin of the day. He won the other by technical fall.

“I wanted to get some of my offense going, but I wasn’t able to work off his defense,” Mondaine said of the finals match. “All in all, it was all right. I’m cool with the pin.”

Heavyweight Ryan Lester went 4-0 in his first outing of the year with three wins by pin, including a win over Kyle Dougherty of Mannford in 2:40 of the finals match.

“I did real well on top, maybe could have been more aggressive with my feet, but top on bottom I thought I did well with today,” Lester said. “I just got into the room this week so these last couple of days of practices are the only ones I’ve had.”

Overall it was a solid performance by MHS, which is coming off a season where they were the Class 6A dual state runners-up. Six Roughers claimed titles in the early-season outing that rewarded only individual champions.

“It’s good to come out strong,” Lester said. “It’s harder to build momentum in the middle of the year so we might as well start now.”

Dylan Fields and Dennis Bunner flipped a coin for the 140-class title and Marcelle McVay beat Leo Arriaga in another off-the-mat decision. The two made the finals at 152.

“Rock, paper, scissors,” McVay said describing the verdict. “We went three times and I won it with scissors. We won’t ever go at each other, not even at state, not against a teammate. We’ll find a way to go at different weights.”

Miles Andrews beat Michael Wright of Edmond Memorial in a decision at 145.

Vann Beard lost in the finals at 171 to Ronnie Belfour of Union in a 7-2 decision. Also, Zach Winkel was edged 3-0 at 112 by Perkins-Tryon’s Hayden Wilson and at 189, Austin Whitaker lost on a decision to Mark Nettles of Perkins-Tryon. The other Rougher to make the finals, David Foster, was decisioned at 135 by Sallisaw’s Chayse Garrison.

Outside of Ballard of Hulbert, the only other area school wrestler to make the finals in any weight class was Alvie Killingsworth of Vian, who was decisioned by Josh Walker of Union at 119.

Fort Gibson’s Nick Daniel was the highest-placing Tiger. Daniel lost to Matthew Vieira for third place at 135 pounds.
