Tulsa tops South Alabama

TULSA (AP) — Jerome Jordan scored 23 points, Justin Hurtt added a career-high 21 and Stephen Idlet had his first career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds as Tulsa overpowered South Alabama 84-62 Saturday.

Tulsa (4-0) took command late in the first half, breaking a 23-23 tie with a 12-0 run. The Hurricane made 15 of 16 free throws in the final 5:26 of the first half as the smaller Jaguars (3-2) committed 16 first-half fouls.

Tulsa led 42-29 at the break. Twenty of the team’s first-half points came from the free-throw line. Tulsa finished with 38 of 50 free throws, compared with 9 of 17 for South Alabama.

“I thought we did what we were supposed to as far as having the huge advantage in size,” said Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik. “Stephen Idlet was the player of the game, he was just everywhere. And Jerome got it going in the second half.” Jordan had 17 of his 23 points in the second.

Hurtt sunk Tulsa’s first 3-point attempt to put Tulsa ahead 47-32, and his second in transition gave Tulsa a 63-45 cushion with 9:23 to go.

Hurtt finished with a trio of 3-pointers and was fouled on a third. He made 2 of 3 free throws to help TU maintain a double-digit lead throughout the second half.

“Justin hit the last two of his threes in transition and that’s what we need to do more of, score in transition,” Wojcik said. “I didn’t think the game had a lot of flow or rhythm with all the fouls but it’s a solid win and I’ll take it.”

South Alabama coach Ronnie Arrow was ejected with 6:10 to go after arguing with the officials and picking up back-to-back technicals.

Jordan made 3 of 4 free throws on the technicals to give Tulsa a 71-54 lead. He added nine rebounds and two blocks as Tulsa outrebounded the Jaguars 53-29. Tulsa did commit 21 turnovers against the Jaguars’ pressure.

Tim Williams led South Alabama with 17 points and Gary Redus added 11. South Alabama shot 37 percent (23 of 62) and had 17 turnovers.

Freshman Donte Medder added 10 points for Tulsa while handling much of the point-guard duties for Ben Uzoh, who fouled out after playing for 23 minutes. But Medder also committed eight turnovers.

“I have a lot of confidence in Donte and he’ll get better and better,” Wojcik said. “I just feel bad for Ben. He’s had two really frustrating games in a row.”
