Hilldale veterans shine

Newcomers also have moments in opening tune-up vs. Haskell

— HASKELL — Judging by Friday’s scrimmage at Haskell HIgh School’s A.B. Shockley Stadium, the Hilldale Hornets’ cupboard isn’t bare.

Even though the Hornets lost 17 players to graduation, new and returning players showed their stuff. First-year starting quarterback Chandler Puckett tossed two touchdown passes in one of the four ten-minute game-like situations in the 12-0 win against the Haymakers.

Puckett tossed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Josh Giem and a 15-yard TD to returnee Richard Mabery. Giem and Mabery are returnees. Puckett was the team’s kicker and also saw action at receiver.

“These guys feel they’ve got something to prove,” Hilldale coach Chad Kirkhart said. “All they’ve heard is that we had all of these players graduate. The guys we have now played well. They came out played with a little fire and that’s what we like.”

Puckett completed 5 of 13 passes for 39 yards. He also showed his ability to run with the ball, gaining 40 yards on seven carries and his longest gain was 15 yards in the third set of game-like conditions in the scrimmage that lasted 90 minutes.

Kirkhart brought his team to the school he coached at for nine years including five as the head coach.

“The guys getting after it on every play is what I’m most pleased about,” he said. “That’s what you’ve got to do to be a good football team.”

The Hornets also scored three times when the ball was put on the 10-yard line. Returning receiver Miles Jackson scored on runs as did Mabery and newcomer Bradley Campbell.

“We ran it good at times but we just want to run it better,” he said.

Even though the Haymakers didn’t score, second-year coach Greg Wilson wasn’t too upset about his team’s showing.

“I got a lot out of this,” he said. “My kids aren’t going to quit. We quit in the past. We didn’t back down from them. All of the respect in the world to coach Kirkhart and what he’s done at Hilldale, but I’m pleased. I liked our intensity level.

“I really don’t think I was displeased with anything. If I see on film that we were acting stupid, then I’ll be upset.”

Both teams return to the field next Friday for their second scrimmages. Hilldale will host Wagoner and Tahlequah at 7 p.m., while Haskell plays at Gore at 6 p.m.
