MHS duo wins at dual tourney

Muskogee’s Dawaylon Barnes and Jacobe Smith helped Oklahoma Red beat Texas 62-12 in pool play at the USA Wrestling Cade National Dual Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Friday.

Barnes, wrestling 138 pounds, pinned Jose Taylor at one minute and 30 seconds. Smith, at 145 pounds, beat Miller Clark by technical fall 7-0.

For the day, the Roughers’ pair won two matches and lost two matches.

The tourney continues today.



Slowpitch game set for today

Eleven area players will represent the East in the Oklahoma Slowpitch Softball Coaches All-State Games at the University of Oklahoma Complex in Norman today.

Five of those players will be in the Middle School game for Class 3A and 4A schools at 1 p.m. The other six are in the Large School game for 6A-5A players at 3 p.m. No area players are in the Small School (A-2A) game at 11 a.m.

In the Middle School game, Oktaha’s Bailey Masterson and Lauryne Dester will suit up along with Hukbert’s Makayla Young, Vian’s Chelsi Drew and Warner’s Brooke Stidham.

In the Large School game, Saharra Henson of state champion Sequoyah along with Tahlequah’s Jessica Blalock, Jenna Reed and Whittney Whittmore, Muskogee’s Coco Epps and Fort Gibson’s CheyAnne Johnson. Tahlequah’s Matt Cloud will be the East’s coach.



Sequoyah player chosen All-State

TAHLEQUAH – Sonny O’Field, the Sequoyah High School record holder with 23 interceptions, has been named an All-State football player and will play in the annual Oklahoma Coaches Association game this summer

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound has committed to play football at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., and is expected to play defensive back.

Other former Sequoyah All-State players include quarterback Nathan Stanley of Southeastern Louisiana University and defensive end Travis Boswell of Northeastern State.

The All-State game this summer will be on July 27 at Tulsa Union’s Tuttle Stadium.
