Muskogee High School’s Dawaylon Barnes placed fourth and Jacobe Smith took sixth place in the freestyle portion of the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National Tournament that ended on Friday in Fargo, N.D.
Barnes wrestled New Jersey’s Ronnie Gentile at 138 pounds, winning the first period 2-1. But Gentile won the second period 6-0 and the decisive third period 6-1.
Smith, meanwhile, had a bye in the first round at 145 pounds in a round robin format. He lost on technical fall to Minnesota’s Mason Manville in losing both periods 6-0, 6-0 and then lost by decision 3-2 and 2-0 to California’s John Leal.
The two losses put Smith in the fifth-sixth place match and he lost to Pennsylvania’s Zach Kelly. He won one period 3-2, but then 6-0 and 8-6.
Earlier in the tournament, the Muskogee duo finished in the top eight in their respective weight divisions to earn All-American status.
"Both of them wrestled well. They had a good tournament," MHS associate head coach Dan Jefferson said. "I'm very pleased with the effort. They wrestled their rear ends off in the tournament."
