MUSKOGEE —
Quarterback Jake Mullen and McMurry’s “Air Raid Offense” must have felt like a blitzkrieg to Bacone at Indian Bowl on Saturday.
Mullen punctured holes in the Warriors’ defense in the first half by completing 18 of 28 passes for 358 yards and four touchdowns in the first half en route to 435 passing yards for the game as McMurry toppled the Bacone Warriors 41-6.
Mullen, the school single-season record holder for pass completions, attempts and passing yards, fired touchdown passes of 27, 71. 8 and 60 yards in helping his team to a 31-0 halftime lead. McMurry scored 24 points in the second period.
The no-huddle passing offense was brought to McMurry by coach Hal Mumme and was popularized by Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, a former assistant coach to Mumme.
For the game, Mullen completed 25 of 38 passes and done for the night after the first series in the fourth quarter.
“He’s a talented young man,” Bacone coach Lloyd Spotted Wolf said. “He manages the offense very well. It’s his second year in it and does an excellent job.”
Five different receivers caught passes for McMurry and three of them – R.J. Long, Marcus Franklin and Delfonte Diamond – caught passes for at least 90 yards in the first two quarters.
Franklin topped his team with six catches for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Long also grabbed six passes for 120 yards.
The other McMurry points were field goals of 31 and 33 yards by Jesse Garcia in the season opener for the Division III school out of Abilene, Texas.
On the other hand, the Warriors had 220 yards of offense in the game, including 52 yards in the first half.
“Our offense was absolutely anemic in the first half,” Spotted Wolf said. “You can’t keep a defense on the field that long like we did in the first half.”
The Warriors finally got on the board with 12:04 left in the game when Keyon Thompson pulled in an 21-yard pass from backup quarterback Gerald Montgomery.
Jamario Thomas led the Warriors in rushing with 77 yards on 17 carries. Starting quarterback Michael Cook completed 11 of 23 passes for 115 yards.
“We talk about looking to the next play and our next play is next week,” Spotted Wolf said. “We just have to back to work.”
Bacone (1-1) returns to action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Bolivar, Mo., against Southwest Baptist. The Warriors’ next home game is Oct. 9 against Southwest Assemblies of God University.
