Nese Walters hit two free throws in the final seconds to give Vian a 41-39 win over Newkirk in a Class 3A regional girls basketball elimination game at Verdigris on Wednesday.
The game was originally scheduled for Monday but was postponed twice due to weather-related issues. Vian (14-8) moves on to meet Eufaula in the Class 3A Area III consolation round at 1:30 today at Fort Gibson’s Harrison Field House. It also sets the Lady Wolverines up to have to win four games in four days to advance to the state tournament.
They got by on Wednesday in spite of shooting just 24 percent and owning a 12-point lead midway through the third period.
Erica Casey led Vian with 14 points. Jennifer Hunter and Joehanna Morris had 11 each.
