The top-ranked Jenks Trojans continued their dominance of the Muskogee Roughers as they extended their on field winning streak, excluding the 2008 forfeit, to 22 straight in the series with a 52-3 romp in District 6A-2 action at Indian Bowl on Thursday.
Jenks (6-2, 5-0) used their marquee players — running back Trey’Vonne Barr’e and wide receiver Jordan Smallwood — to make short work of the Roughers as they jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter.
Barr’e carried 12 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns. including a 68-yard scamper. Smallwood, who has verbally committed to University of Oklahoma, had five receptions for 150 yards that included a 60-yard pass and run touchdown.
Neither saw action past halftime.
With the size and speed of the Trojan defensive front, Roughers’ coach Josh Blankenship came into the game feeling the short passing game might be more effective than trying to run the ball. And, with three sophomore receivers in the game due to injuries, Blankenship was pleased with the effort he got.
“We saw some things we thought we could take advantage of in the passing game and we did a lot of that,” he said. “We asked those receivers to make plays over and over again and I was extremely proud of them.”
On defense, the Roughers faced the juggernaut offense of Jenks with the youth and inexperience that has been the Roughers’ weakness this season. That was exploited early and often by the Trojans.
“Defensively, we asked our kids to contain one of the best backs in the state (Barr’e), a Division I-type of wide receiver (Smallwood) and a quarterback in Kyle Alexander that manages things well and all of them running behind a talented offensive line,” Bllankenship said. “We didn’t tackle very well and they made us look kind of silly sometimes with their athleticism.”
Muskogee opened the game with an on-sides kick attempt and, although the Roughers got to the ball first they did so before it went the required 10 yards and the Trojans started at the Rougher 49 yard line. Six plays later, they settled for a 40-yard field goal by Daniel Donnely to take a 3-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
On Muskogee’s first possession, the Roughers started at their 20 and got as far the Jenks 44 but came up short on a fourth down fake punt run by Preston Soper.
The Trojans took over on downs and on their first play, Barr’e raced 48 yards to the Rougher 10 yard line. Alexander followed with a 10-yard scoring pass to Trey Michalczewski to make 10-0 with just over eight minutes left in the quarter.
Following the kick off, Muskogee again showed some spark as quarterback Trevor Jiles connected with wide receiver James Buckhanan for a 53 yard gain to the Jenks 32 yards line, but failed to move the ball on four plays and turned it over on downs. On Jenks first play, Barr’e got outside for a 68 yard touchdown scamper to make it a 17-0 with 4:42 left in the first quarter and the rout was on.
Three more touchdowns and the Trojans’ lead grew to 38-0. With Muskogee facing a third-and-18 at its own 17 yards line and less than a minute to play in the half, Jenks took a time out which brought some boos from the crowd. But Blankenship said it’s all part of the bigger picture for the Trojans.
“They wanted to see what their first team could do in a short clock situation to prepare for the playoffs and I understand,” he said. “And they played reserves the entire second half, so I don’t think there was any intent to run the score up on us”
The Trojans went on the score in three plays to make it 45-0 at the half as they scored on all seven of their possessions in the half.
Muskogee got on the board to start the third quarter as a pass interference call and a 33-yard pass and run from Jiles to Adonis Talbert put the Roughers at the Trojan 5. Three running plays lost four yards and Muskogee had to settle for a 28-yard Soper field goal to make it 45-3.
The only other score in the half was by the Jenks reserves as running back Darwin Thompson scored on a 35 yard run
The Roughers now fall to 1-6 on the season and 1-4 in district play and see their slim playoff hopes pretty much disappear as they get ready for a road trip to Putnam City next week.
“I’m hopeful we can move past the losses the last two weeks, particularly the loss to Sapulpa and play for what kind of legacy this team wants to leave behind over the next two weeks, said Blankenship.
