Rodeo coach Wes Marrel of Bacone College reports that students from Bacone College and Connors State College placed at the Panhandle State University’s National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) rodeo in Guymon this past weekend. Jake Morgan (Bacone) scored a 10.2 in calf roping in the first round and came back with a 12.6 in the short round, placing him fourth in the average with a 22.8.
Kendra Elliott (Bacone) ran a 17.3 in the first round then came back with a 17.21 in the short-round for 34.51 in the average, placing her fourth.
Congratulations go out to Tanner McElhaney for winning the long-go, short-go, and winning the average in the steer wrestling with an 8.3 total. Ryan Bothum placed second in the long-go and was fourth in the average. Tanner and Ryan both represent Connors.
In the team roping, Connors’ Ryan Richtermeier and his partner, Taylor Lang, ended up with a 9.6 in the average, placing fourth.
Connors’ Tamara Smith made the short-go in breakaway roping and tied for sixth.
Today through Saturday, the NIRA will be held at Weatherford’s Southwestern Oklahoma State University. For information on the Bacone Rodeo Team contact Marrell at 685-0461.
TNT Productions will try to have the first barrel race of their 2009 series at the Muskogee Round-Up Club tonight. They have ordered some really beautiful buckles from Bob Burg Designs. In case of rain, be sure and call before you haul — Dione Teehee at 348-8073.
The Muskogee Round-Up Club has scheduled Playday No. 1 of their 2009 series for Saturday evening. See their website for a handbill or call Ray Stewart, chairman of the playday committee, at 348-9378. Everyone is invited, contestants and/or spectators. There is no admission charge. Exhibition barrels from 5:30 to 6 p.m., playday to follow.
The Muskogee Stockyards will be holding their horse sale tonight. Tack begins at 5 p.m., followed by horses.
The Parrish Horse Company will include a dispersal sale during their regular horse sale on Friday. Some of the horses already consigned have bloodlines such as Poco San Juan, Sugar Bars, and Hancock. There are palominos, red roans, grays — you can now preview registration papers that are already on file in the office at Parrish Horse Company.
The Parrish Horse Company’s first Performance Ranch Horse Sale and Competition, which will be held annualy, will be held on Saturday. The horse placing highest in the competition that sells during the sale will receive a trophy saddle. Horses will be shown in reining, working a cow, roping a cow, and general ranch duties such as opening a gate, load/unload, and dragging a log. Performance classes will begin at 11 a.m. and the sale will begin at 2 p.m. Entry fee is $100, plus 8-percent commission. The wind was strong at Checotah on Sunday afternoon, but the ropers were stronger! The winners of the Barton’s Speed’s Match Ropings will be posted online at www.MatchRoping.com if you want to check that out.
On Saturday at 6 p.m. they will be having a No. 9 Match Roping at Hilltop Arena. It will be capped at a triad No. 5. Entry fee is $75 per man. The limit will be 16 teams and it will take less than one hour to run. All teams must be paid up by 5:45 p.m. To pre-enter and be guaranteed a slot, call Bart at 616-9269. This is not only a fun event to enter, it is also a fun one to watch. Spectators are welcome — free of charge.
There will be a saddle drawpot at Hilltop following the Match Roping. It will be a No. 10 with an 8 incentive, capped at No. 5. Books open at 7 p.m. and close at 8 p.m. for the computer draw. There will be a Master Saddle certificate to the high money winner. There will be the regular drawpots and practices at Checotah Round-Up Club on Monday and Thursday nights.
