Fort Gibson duo leads way in ending Hilldales seven-game win streak

FORT GIBSON B.J. Pennington and Courtney Gaston deserve nicknames.

Twin Towers might fit the Fort Gibson duo.

They certainly showed it Friday night as they combined for 42 points and 25 rebounds in leading the Tigers past the Hilldale Hornets 74-52 at Harrison Field House.

Pennington, a 6-foot-6 senior, had 14 points and 12 rebounds, while the 6-4 junior Gaston scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 13 boards to dominate the inside game for the No. 6 team in the Okrankings.com Class 4A poll.

Coach (Gary) Hendrix always tell us to get the boards, offensively, defensively and the backside, Pennington said. Weve got guys who shoot the ball well from the outside, but Courtney and I are able to get inside.,

Hendrix watched his team dominate the boards. outrebounding the Hornets 31-16.

We were bigger than Hilldale and that certainly helped, he said. Both B.J. and Courtney really hit the boards. Theyre playing really well for us right now.

Cameron Sikes, who scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, had to defend against the two Tigers during the game.

They were tough to handle. Thats for sure, he said. It would shock me if Fort Gibson doesnt make the state tournament.

Jeremy Rogers, the Hilldale coach, was just as impressed with the Fort Gibson tandem.

I told our kids to shut down their guards and keep them from shooting. We did a pretty good job at that, he said. But the big guys murdered us.

Fort Gibson (17-3) extended its winning streak to 10 games, while unranked Hilldale (13-7) had its winning streak end at seven. It was also the Hornets second loss in their last 10 games.

Nick Cowan led the Hornets with 21 points, scoring 14 of that in the first half.

Fort Gibson travels to Tahlequah to play Sequoyah today with the boys playing at 4 p.m. and the girls tipping off at 5:30. Hilldale, meanwhile, wraps up the regular season on Monday at home with Morris.

Brennan Miller may be back into playing shape and that could spell bad news for Fort Gibsons opponents.

The senior guard pumped in a game-high 20 points in her second start since being sidelined earlier this season with a hip injury. She scored 13 of her total in the second half.

The Lady Hornets (3-17) battled the 4A No.. 2 Lady Tigers (17-3) to an 8-8 tie early, but then coach Jerry Walkers squad went on a 7-1 run to end the first period with a 15-9 lead.

After leading 33-22 at halftime, Fort Gibson then roared to a 31-11 advantage after the third period for a 64-33 lead and cruised to the victory.

Hilldale got after it, Fort Gibson coach Jerry Walker said. Nana (Wallace) and Brennan played well for us.

Wallace was the only other double-digit scorer for the Lady Tigers with 12 points.

We were ready to play and we played for four quarters, Hilldale coach Lachelle Brown said. Fort Gibson got hot and start hitting their 3-point shots.

Regan Oaks was the lone Lady Hornet in double figures with 16 point, 10 of that in the first half.
