MHS wins seesaw battle

NORMAN — For all Jameel Owens came to do — and did — in the end, Muskogee needed a response from its Legion of Doom.

Jordan Brown, making his first start at cornerback, had two key interceptions, returning one for what led to a go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

It began a 23-point run as the Roughers overcame five turnovers and a two-touchdown deficit to beat Norman North, 36-27, and move to 2-0 on the season.

Brown’s first interception led to a 10-play, 75-yard third quarter scoring drive, ending with Travon Brooks’ 4-yard run with 3:09 to play, cutting the deficit to 20-13.

On North’s ensuing drive, a ground game which had been effective all night pushed the Timberwolves into Rougher territory but on a third-and-5 at the Roughers 35, Brown stepped in front of another toss by quarterback Jake Damrill which appeared to float off his hand into the right flat. Brown took it 58 yards to the house and with Brooks scoring off a swinging gate formation for the two points, MHS was up 21-20.

North went three-and-out and Muskogee’s offense answered, Cook hitting Andre Anderson for 10 yards and Owens on the two-point reception to make it 29-20.

The two teams traded scores in the final six minutes, Brooks adding the icer on a 45-yard run with 1:33 to play.

“Defense needs the offense and the offense needs the defense and we got a little bit of both,” Brown said.

The Roughers got a lot of Owens, who beat cornerback Chika Madu in single coverage and North’s secondary in as much as triple coverage at times for a career-best 184 yards on 14 catches. His 33-yard touchdown reception made it 7-0 with 8:07 showing on the first-quarter clock.

The matchup of Owens and Madu, who transfered from Norman High School over the summer, was considered of primary intrigue coming into the game.

“I just wanted to do what I can do,” Owens said. “I heard he talked about how he was going to lock me up. It didn’t happen.”

Owens and defensive lineman Stacy McGee, who finished with 15 tackles, will make a weekend of it in Norman as both are scheduled for a visit to the University of Oklahoma for the Sooners’ game today against Miami.

MHS coach Matt Hennesy will go home and no doubt, breathe a sigh of relief before turning his attention to a 2-0 Union team that beat Jenks, 43-42, in overtime Friday. The two teams will square off at Indian Bowl for the Roughers’ home opener.

“We had bad practices Wednesday and Thursday and it showed tonight,” Hennesy said. “Really I thought it was partly due to the fact we beat them twice last year. We’ve got another team coming in next week that we’ve beat twice and this can’t happen again.”

The coach was pleased with Cook’s recovery, guiding the team on the 75-yard drive just after his third interception of the night — a 77-yard return by North’s Andre Cheatham.

“He could have folded his tent but didn’t. Instead he put the game back on his shoulders and carried his load,” Hennesy said.

North running back Beau Blankenship finished with 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Timberwolves, which lost to Muskogee once in the regular season and then in the second round of the playoffs last season, fell to 1-1.
