OKTAHA —
– Probably tired of running in traffic and dodging numerous mishaps in front of him, once Jeran Frailey got the lead and cleared traffic, he ran away from the field to win the 360 Modified feature at Outlaw Motor Speedway here Friday night.
Four accidents in the first five laps – all happening in front of the Chouteau driver – plagued the 20-lap race. Four cars were involved in a first-lap wreck that delayed the race almost 30 minutes. The mishap started in the middle of the backstretch and extended onto the front stretch where two cars came to rest hooked together.
There were three more spinouts in the next four laps before Frailey took matters into his own hands. He passed Ryan Williams heading into turns one and two and rocketed down the backstretch, leaving the field in his dust. Three more caution flags over the final 15 laps did not deter his efforts.
It was Frailey’s first feature win since week No. 1 back in March.
At the finish, he enjoyed a five-second lead over Spiro’s Martin Hemphill. Inola’s Justin Shoemaker was third. Hemphill and Shoemaker both won features last week at OMS. One of the races was a makeup of a rain-out.
Modified
After mechanical problems in his heat sent him to the feature, George Martin had his car hooked up for the feature, holding off defending division champion Joe Duvall to capture his first feature victory of the year.
Martin led from the get-go, grabbing the lead on lap one from the outside front row. The only time he was really challenged came on lap 15 with the race’s only caution took out Fort Gibson’s Andy Morris and Brandon Wilson, Fort Smith, who were running second and third at the time with Duvall fourth.
On the restart, Duvall just didn’t have the power to track down Martin.
Factory Stock
Wes Swafford held-off a final-lap challenge from Lee McLain to win his first feature of the year.
Swafford, Salina, took the lead from McLain when the Chouteau driver was hindered by a slower car (Gary Howard, Springfield, Ark.) in turn three of lap 10. McLain, bidding for his second feature win in a row and fourth of the year, had led since lap five.
The two leaders also battled for the top spot for the final three laps. McLain actually pulled ahead on the backstretch on lap 18, but Swafford had the advantage in the high groove and won the race to the flag stand.
McLain once again went ahead on the backstretch on the white flag lap and held the lead into the final turn. But, as he did two laps earlier, Swafford held the high line and won by a half-car at the finish line.
Tahlequah’s Jason Ward was third with Robert LaRue, Oktaha, just beating Muskogee’s Kyle Davis for fourth.
Mini-Stocks
Jerry Hoffman, Glenpool, led for the final 7 laps to win the special Mini-Stock feature. Hoffman took the lead from the start and never trailed. Drumwright’s Brandon James was second, moving into that spot halfway through the 10-lap chase.
Josh Tyre, Keifer, was third.
After the race, Hoffman was disqualified when he refused to undergo a post-race inspection, moving James into first-place money.
