Jucos, transfers make up Warriors’ recruiting haul

When Trevor Rubly and his Bacone football coaching staff hit the recruiting trail this year, their focus was on junior college players and transfers.

“We wanted to try to get as many players as we could for the spring,” he said. “It takes time for kids to adjust when they go into a new school and program. We’re going to have five weeks of spring ball. We’re done recruiting those type of players and we’re talking to high school players now.”

One of those transfers is Corey Todd, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound lineman and Hilldale High School graduate. He comes from Northwestern State.

“He didn’t like it up there and contacted us,” Rubly said. “We made it work. Corey can definitely help us and he has what we’ve been missing here at Bacone and that’s a tackle’s body. He’s tall and lanky. He’s a hard-working kid.”

Rubly was searching for quarterbacks, wide receivers, linemen and defensive backs in his first recruiting class as head coach.

Three quarterbacks have signed, including West Alabama transfer Karl Birkenfield and California juco transfer Raymond Huizar. Meanwhile, Kyle Cuban, Ryan Morrow and Corey Ward return from the 2011 team.

“We’ll see who shines,” Rubly said.”No job is safe. Players are going to have to earn their spots on the team.”

Other juco players who have signed include wide receivers Vanalairi Hope of Joliet, Ill., Junior College and David Champman of Blinn (Texas) Junior College. Chaz West, a University of Central Michigan transfer, will join the Warriors in the secondary.

“We’ve got a good group of signees,” Rubly said.

Bacone is coming off a 5-6 season in 2011, its best since 2001 when it finished 5-5.
