TAHLEQUAH – On a wet and rainy night in Tahlequah, the Sequoyah Indians lost a heartbreaker to the Victory Christian Conquerors 35-34.
The Indians looked to have control of the game throughout the first half, building 27-0 lead, only to watch the Conquerors come back in the second half to take the game.
Sequoyah would strike first with 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter a 17-yard scamper by Karter Woodruff would put the Indians on top 7-0.
The Indians would add a 22-yard touchdown toss from Brayden Scott to Cody Cooper and a 16-yard strike to Ryan Helsley to bring the score to 19-0. Scott would add another toss of 36 yards to Niko Hammer and the Indian lead had ballooned to 27-0.
The second half would be all about the Conquerors. After the Indians’ (2-1) defense would force a Victory Christian punt, Kyle Sanders lost the ball and it was recovered by VC’s Andrew King who would return it for a touchdown. The extra point brought the game to 27-6. After a Sequoyah punt, Victorey Christian’s Keats Calhoun would connect with Jacoby Hicks for a 40 yard touchdown with the PAT making the score 27-14.
“It’s my fault,” said an upset Sequoyah coach Brent Scott, father of Brayden. “We put out twos in and they didn’t play as well as they could.”
The next series Sequoyah would answer with a 50-yard scoring rumble by Helsley and looked to have put the game away with 3:38 remaining in the game and the Indians up 34-14.
Victory Christian would answer with an 8-yard touchdown and a 15-yard touchdown to bring the game to 34-27. Calhoun would then break the hearts of the Indians by finding Jalen Wood for a 54 yard touchdown pass to tie the game. The extra point by Taylor Cole gave the Conquerors thewin.
Brayden Scott led the Indians through the air going 19-for-25 for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Helsley would lead the ground attack picking up 128 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
Sequoyah begins District 3A-7 play next week when they travel to Locust Grove on Friday.
