Vian makes early work of Eufaula

— EUFAULA — Vian dominated its game with Eufaula to the point that only the weather could slow the Class 2A No. 2 Wolverines down.

Vian scored at will and used a smothering defense to crush Eufaula, 62-6, Friday night at Paul Bell Stadium in a contest that was stopped with 8:45 remaining in the fourth quarter because of lightning.

Despite Vian’s offensive performance, it was the first-team defense that held its opponent to almost nothing in the first half for a second consecutive week. Eufaula was only able to muster 15 total yards in the first half and was held without a first down.

“Defense wins championships,” said Vian coach Brandon Tyler. “We’re going to hang our hat on them. They are a physical group, always fighting for the ball. They may even be better than the 2006 group.”

Offensively, Vian did what it wanted and how it wanted from the first play. Rowdy Simon, who finished with 101 yards rushing on just eight carries, scored on a 60-yard run to give Vian the early lead.

The Wolverines, limited in the passing game last week, took to the air Friday. Senior quarterback Landon Decker connected on 4 of 7 passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns as Vian built a 28-0 lead in the first quarter.

“We didn’t get to work on our passing much last week because the game got out of hand early,” Tyler said. “I thought we did a good job of making good decisions. We were able to get some bubble screens and then go over the top to Tre Locust.”

Locust scored on a 36-yard reception, and then Eric Casey hauled in the next two scoring passes of 16 and 38 yards.

Warren Zachary took over in the second quarter scoring all three of the Wolverine touchdowns on runs of five and 50 yards. Zachary’s third score came on a 20-yard pass from Rylee Simon as Vian took a 49-0 lead into halftime.

“I thought we stayed focused which is the sign of well led team,” Tyler said. “Our seniors know what it takes. They want to jump on the opponent early and fortunately we’ve been able to do that.”

Despite its inability to do anything in the first half, Eufaula finally got its ground game going in the third quarter. Matt Beard had runs of 18 and 19 yards to highlight a 72-yard drive that ended with a Cody Holder-Cathy 1-yard plunge to make it 49-6.

But Vian was not finished with its big play offense. Casey scored on a 76-yard run and Tyler White blitzed the Ironhead defense on a 75-yard run to make it 62-6 just before lightning stopped the game.
