Keys-Checotah stoppped, won't resume

— EDITOR'S NOTE: Officials from both teams decided not to resume this game. In the original report, it was to be resumed tonight. That will not happen and the game will be ruled a tie.

CHECOTAH — The Checotah-Keys battle Friday night at Ogle Field had the makings of a good football game. That is, until Mother Nature showed her fury and forced the postponement of the second half until 7:30 tonight.

The game was postponed because of weather with the Wildcats leading at halftime, 14-7.

The big-play Wildcats (1-0) took advantage of Keys (0-1) to forge an early lead.

On Keys’ opening play, a fumble by running back Jesse Heeberle was recovered by Checotah’s Brenton Catron at the Cougar 43.

The Wildcats capitalized on the turnover with a drive capped off by an athletic play by Checotah quarterback Tyler Addy. After unsuccessful runs, Addy took the snap and rolled to his right, hugging the sideline until finding Denver Berry near the sideline for a 9 yard touchdown.

Keys’ next possession was short but productive with Senior Trevor Eubanks moving to his right and rumbling 65 yards for a touchdown. The extra point added by J.J. Ozturk brought the game to a 7-7 tie.

Checotah was not finished for the half. With 4:14 left, Addy found Deondre Owens for a 65 yard touchdown. The extra point was added by Junior Jacob Campbell bringing the lead to 14-7.

Keys could not muster a score despite being at the Wildcats 1 yard line. After back-to-back penalties that moved the ball back to the 14 yard line, the Cougars were unable to get a field goal attempt off in time before the clock expired.

The game was postponed when lightning moved through the area, with officials deciding to resume action tonight.
