Hornets can’t overcome early disaster; Vinita girls control Lady Hornets

Hilldale fell behind 22-8 after the first quarter and couldn’t overcome Vinita as the Hornets fell 80-61 in Verdigris Valley Conference action at the Hilldale Event Center on Friday night.

Hilldale, dropping to 11-8 for the season and 7-5 in conference, trailed 41-22 at halftime.

“We start slow, but we finish real well,” coach Jeremy Rogers said. “We have to figure out a way to play four solid quarters.”

Tony Cabrera, Dylan Rowan and Jordan Proctor scored 12 points each for the Hornets.

Vinita, coached by former Muskogee coach Tony Roach, was led by Jake Roach’s 25 points. Jake is Tony’s son who signed a football national letter of intent with Northeastern State University earlier this week.

Ranked No. 3 in the Okrankings.com Class 4A poll, Vinita improved to 17-3 for the season.

Hilldale returns to the court Thursday at Fort Gibson before returning home on Friday against Miami. Rogers’ squad wraps up the regular season at home on Monday against Wagoner.



Girls:

Vinita 52, HHS 19

In the girls game, Vinita  won 52-19, dropping the Lady Hornets to 5-15, 1-10 with their eighth consecutive loss. It was 28-6 at the half. Vinita came in No. 3 in 4A and with a 69-35 win over Hilldale in December.

Hilldale’s girls also play at Fort Gibson  on Thursday after a five-day break.
