— NSU women defeat SOSU



DURANT — The No. 23-ranked Northeastern State women’s basketball team defeated Southeastern Oklahoma State University 80-57 Wednesday night at Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

Ten different RiverHawks scored in the contest, led by 14 points from junior guards Katy Harsen and Taylor Collins.  Tosha Tyler added 11 with five assists, while fellow guard Taylor Lewis dropped 10 points. Sophomore guard Fontana Tate led the team with nine rebounds.

Bailey Welch was the only member of the Savage Storm to reach double figures, as she finished with 11. The RiverHawks led 41-22 at halftime.

NSU is now set for its home opener. The team will play host to Northwestern Oklahoma State University at 6 p.m. Tuesday inside Jack Dobbins Field House.

 

Connors men stay unbeaten



WARNER – Connors State cruised to a 27-5 lead midway the first half and went on to an 84-50 victory over the Bacone JV on Wednesday night at Melvin Self Field House.

The victory lifted the 21st-ranked Cowboys to 6-0 and dropped Bacone to 1-5. The Cowboys will open Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play at home on Monday against Murray State. Tipoff is 8 p.m.

Cowboys had four players score in double figures with sophomore Denell Henderson leading the attack with 16 points while pulling down 7 rebounds and blocking four shots. Jamarcus Weatherspoon poured home 15 points followed by Willie Atwood with 12 and Troy Jones 10.

Bacone’s scoring was led by Landon Smoote with 13 points.



Sooner ladies fall in opener



NORMAN — Aaryn Ellenberg scored 24 points and Whitney Hand added 19 as Oklahoma mounted a furious comeback attempt, but fell short losing its first home opener in 15 years, 86-80 to UCLA on Wednesday.

Ellenberg was 6-for-6 on 3-pointers to keep OU close in the first half, but UCLA managed to stall that option in the second half as they built as much as an 18 point lead with 12 minutes remaining.

Four Bruins scored in double figures, led by 18 from Thea Lemberger. Tulsa, Okla., native and Tennessee transfer Alyssia Brewer totaled 15 points and 16 rebounds in her second game with UCLA.

UCLA found its game going through the paint, where it scored 46 of its points and dominated rebounding 56-34.

The loss was Oklahoma’s first in a home opener since Sherri Coale’s second season in 1997-98. The Sooners previously had a 14-game winning streak of Lloyd Noble Center openers.

OU’s next outing is at home against Saint Louis at the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday. Tipoff at 2 p.m.
