Skaggs, Richardson pull out victories

Turn two was the favorite passing point for feature winners in the Outlaw Modified and 360 Modified divisions at Outlaw Motor Speedway here Friday night.

Greg Skaggs of Bixby and Dale Richardson of Muskogee went from third-to-first out of the turn to win their respective features — Skaggs in the Outlaw Modified and Richardson, in the 360.

It was Skaggs’ seventh win — second in as row. He is the defending track champion. Richardson has won four features.

Patiently waiting until he could get into the high groove, Richardson zipped into the lead with four laps to go. In third, Richardson trailed Spiro’s Martin Hemphill and Ozark, Ark., driver Clay Julian.

Going into turn one on lap 16, he made a tremendous move to pass the two leaders, first Julian and them Hemphill. From there it was pedal-to-the-medal to the finish line.

Hemphill and Julian were dominating the favored high groove, keeping Richardson at bay. But he finally got his nose in front of Julian just past the start-finish line and he got around Hemphill, going high to low out of turn two and passing him just entering the backstretch..

From there, Richardson took over the high ground to take control.

Julian passed Hemphill with one lap to go and held him off on the dash to the finish to claim second. Jay Rierson of Booneville, Ark., was fourth and last week’s feature, Shannon Reheard of Muskogee was fifth.

Richardson is the only driver at the track to drive in two divisions. He leads the Grand Nationals in points. He was second in that feature.

Outlaw Modified

Like Richardson, Skaggs also made his move with four laps remaining, but he was fourth behind Fort Gibson’s Justin Fulton, Beggs’ Joe Wright, and Chelsea’s Joe Duvall. He and Duvall got around Wright in the backstretch on lap 17.

And, like Richardson, he got ahead of first Duvall and then Fulton out of two to forge ahead. The two made a run on Skaggs out of four going into the white flag lap, but they’d didn’t have the traction he had in the run to the flagstand.

Skaggs drove a perfect high groove on the his final lap to win by two cars over Fulton, with Duvall third.

Fulton was after his first feature win while Duvall was chasing his second.

Grand Nationals

Avoiding damage in an early-lap wreck, Muskogee’s Kevin Flock captured his fifth feature win of the year. Flock, third in the division in the point championship, beat the division’s leader, Richardson, by six car-lengths to the finish.

Flock took the lead on lap seven — after the second accident of the evening brought out red flag. The incident occurred when Randy Moses II got into the bumper of race leader Jess Sims of Stilwell in front of the grandstands. Also collected up in the mishap were Flock, Broken Arrow’s Dillon Rupe, and Muskogee’s Colton Dunlap.

Flock bumped the back of Moses’ car after Moses and Stilwell went nose-to-bumper. Rupe got into the mess and lost the entire rear-end of his car — the wheels and axle were rolled into the infield while his car went onto the hook.

Dunlap was involved in a first lap accident, bumped from behind in front of the grandstands. His car ended up on a tire just across from the flagstand. Lifted off the tire by a wrecker, he got back into the race on the restart, only to be caught up in the second wreck.

After Flock took the lead, the race was for second between Morris and Richardson. They battled for eight laps before Richardson got the advantage out of turn two on lap 18. By that time, Flock had a sizable lead.

Pure Stock

Leading from start to finish, Bobby Disheroon finally cashed in on his first feature win of the year. The Hulbert driver drove away from the field to beat Wes Swafford of Salina and Lee McLain of Chouteau to the finish.

Disheroon took the lead from the pole and battled Don Johnson of Muskogee for the early lead. Brody Young of Alma, Ark., last week’s feature winner, was also in the hunt. He finished fourth.

Front Wheel Drive

In the best race of the season in the division, Van Buren, Ark., driver Jim Richesin beat a duo of fellow Arkansas drivers to register his second straight feature win of the year.

At the finish, Richesin let Gary Strange of Greenwood and Chris Perkins of Perkins. The three ran bumper-to-bumper-to-bumper for the final eight laps of the 15-lap race.

Richesin took the lead on an eight-lap move on the backstretch, breaking away from Strange and Perkins. In the high groove, he drove low and then went back high to grab the lead. He never trailed after that.

Roland’s Ron Palmer, who has 11 feature wins, was involved in a first lap accident. His damaged racer was towed to the pits.

There is a $500 bounty on Palmer — going to the driver who can beat him to the finish line. Palmer has to be running to complete the race and has to be running on the same lap as the winner.

Late Model

Justin Wells of Aurora, Mo., led from start to finish to win the 25-lap feature. Had a two-second lead over Rex Merritt of Billings, Mont. At one time, Wells had an eight-second lead over Merritt and the rest of the field, but he got into slower traffic, which let Merritt close the gap.
