Great drivers on and off the track

MUSKOGEE — Thunderbird has some of the greatest drivers anywhere, on the track and in their hearts. This was proven last week when two of this year’s top drivers reached out to the kids in attendance.

Carl Conley, a multiple feature winner this year in the modified division, printed fifty free snow cone tickets and handed them out at intermission to children that lined the fence during trophy presentations. Conley paid for the snow cones out of his winnings and said he just wanted to do something for the kids.

Earlier in the year Conley stated “racing is great for family and friends, whether its working on the cars or just going to watch together, it keeps us close.”

Stanley Slader, promoter said “ that was great, we have drivers that would do anything for anyone. Whether it be helping a fellow driver get their car fix for the next race or reaching out to the kids and fans. Racing wouldn’t be possible without great drivers and great fans, and we have both.”

Kyle Slader, the 15 year point leader in both Street Stock and Sport mod, put a smile on a lot of kids faces last week. He passed out around 40 trophies he had won in previous years racing cars and go-karts to kids in the stands. “I just wanted to see the kids smile,” Slader said. “I will be giving out more later in the year, but without the kids and thier parents, we wouldn’t have a reason to race. It’s all about the fans.”

This week there will be one dollar snow cones for the kids, and those young at heart. Plus, there will be give-aways throughout the night for fans and you never know what other surprises might pop up. One for sure is that fans have been treated to some great side by side racing and last week even a few exciting crashes.

The point battle in the Strictly Stock class is the only one that changed on top. Alex Heimer now leads with Tim Cline, Jim Walker, Taylor Halpain and David Rowland trailing him. Dillon Rupe of Broken Arrow sits comfortably on top in the Super Stock division. Roy Cole is second, Mike Fuzzy Withrow is third, Darien Austin fourth and Jason Sperry has moved to fifth.

Kyle Slader has stetched his point lead over Dalton Ragsdale in the Street Stocks to 46 points. Dan Parks, Allen Richey and Cory Carter round out the top five.

Jeran Frailey is Mr. Consistant this year and has used that to get ahead of Doug Ford by 122 points in the Modified division. Brett Hansen sits in third and is slowly gaining on the second spot. Mike Wroblewski is fourth with Jared Russell fifth.

The Sport Mods have had a few weeks off from point racing due to specials and emods being able to run with them for the past few weeks. The Sport Mod class will return to points this week and many drivers are expected to be here getting ready for next week’s NCRA special. NCRA southern modified series has average 37 Sport Mods this year and are excited to be coming to the historic half mile next week.

This week’s points races will close out July and get ready for an action packed month of August. NCRA will be the headliner on August 7th, then a week later it is anyones turn that can find an old car to knock the windows out of and a helmet to strap on to get on the track. The first annual “Checkers or Wreckers 100” enduro will be held after the regular races on the 14th.

And finally what many have been waitng for on August 21st the OCRS winged sprint cars will return to the half mile. So bring the family for lot of fun and excitement and remember racing starts at 8 pm.
