Signing day notebook

NSU inks 30 freshmen

Northeastern State has signed 30 freshman to National Letters of Intent on the first official day, according to head coach Kenny Evans.

The RiverHawks, who will become official members of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) this fall, could ink additional commitments later in the week.

Among the 2012 recruiting class are 22 incoming freshmen from Oklahoma, six from Texas and two from Arkansas. Several signees had prep experience on both sides of the ball. Offensively, NSU signed nine wide receivers, seven offensive linemen, five running backs, three tight ends and three quarterbacks. On defense, it inked nine defensive backs, six defensive linemen and five linebackers.

Locals were Muskogee reciever/cornerback Aaron Fowler, Fort Gibson linebacker Lane Dortch and Wagoner linebacker Jeremy Applegate. Jake Roach, son of former Muskogee basketball coach Tony Roach, is also in the NSU class. Roach was a quarterback in football and guard in basketball for Vinita and is first in his class academically.

Rival teammates

Applegate, the Phoenix Large School Defensive Player of the Year, signed Wednesday alongside his high school teammate Heath Wilson, who will play at Pittsburg State. They open against NSU.

“I plan to whip his butt,” Wilson predicted with a grin.

“He thinks so anyways,” Applegate said, adding “I’ll predict something later.”

Alva connection

Another of Muskogee’s signees, linebacker Wes Starr, signed with Northwestern State in Alva. He’ll be playing at the alma mater of David Heath, last year’s defensive line coach who coached Starr the two previous years at defensive coordinator.
