Muskogee girls still streaking; boys fall to Owasso

Peaking at this time of the season is always good, and that is what the Muskogee girls basketball team is doing.

The Lady Roughers (17-6, 10-4 Frontier Conference) extended their winning streak to eight as they defeated the Owasso Lady Rams 61-39 on Friday in Owasso.

“We are pleased with the way the girls finished the regular season,” said MHS coach Doyle Rowland. “We have been rebounding the ball well as of late and the girls are now listening to what we have been saying all along.”

The game was a tight affair throughout the first half with Muskogee taking a 31-25 lead into the locker room. The second half saw the Lady Roughers clamp down on defense, outscoring Owasso 30-14 in the half to secure the win.

Kelsey McClure and Deanna Moore led the way for Muskogee scoring 13 points each while Coco Epps finished with 12 points. Chelsie Keys grabbed 10 rebounds while Morgan Walker turned in a strong defensive performance, holding the Lady Rams’ Taylor Koelsch to two points.

“”The second half we went to the press,” Rowland said. “It sparked us on both ends of the floor. Overall, we had a very good game.”

The Lady Roughers are off until Thursday when they travel to Bixby to take on Westmoore at 6:30 p.m. in the Class 6A East Regionals. A win would put them in next Saturday’s 1:30 p.m. regional final.

The Roughers saw another bad scoring night come back to haunt them, falling behind by 13 at the half and never able to recover.

Muskogee (8-14, 2-12) was led by Tramal Ivy who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

“We played good defense throughout,” said MHS coach Lloyd Williams. “We were not good scoring the ball in the second half and that did us in.”

The Roughers next play Jenks at Tulsa Washington in the Class 6A East Regional at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
