Roughers thumped by Tahlequah; FGHS also has tough day

OWASSO — Tahlequah hurler Austin Riley two-hit Muskogee as the Tigers downed the Roughers 10-1 at the Ram Invitational on Friday.

Tyler Bowden’s solo home run in the fifth inning broke up the no-hitter. Dakota Morse was the losing pitcher as the Roughers dropped to 4-5 for the season. Casey Winters added a pinch-hit single in the fifth for the Roughers.

Riley struck out five batters, but he also did damage with his bat as he had four hits, including a three-run double in the sixth. He also had three singles and drove in three runs.

Colby Brittain had a a three-run home run  in the first inning as the Tigers, 5-4 for the season, meet 6A No. 1 Owasso at 7:30 tonight for the tournament championship.

“We’re not going to back down from anybody,” Tahlequah coach Nick Zodrow said. “We’re starting to play better now as we’ve won five of our last six games. We started off a little rocky, but we’re getting a little momentum now.”

Muskogee coach Jeremy Griffin was concerned.

“We had way too many mistakes,” he said. “We were poor offensively and didn’t make any adjustments at the plate. We didn’t have any consistency up there. We didn’t get it done.”

“If we cut down on our mistakes and play Rougher baseball, we’ll be fine.”

Muskogee plays Fort Gibson at 5:30 p.m. for third place. Fort Gibson (2-4) lost to Owasso 17-0 in the other tournament semifinal. The Rams scored six runs in the first inning and nine more in the third to improve to 9-0.

The Tigers’ lone hit was a fifth-inning infield single by Tristian Johnson.

“We’re going to come back and try to win two out of three games here,” Fort Gibson coach Randy Smith said. “That’s our goal now.”
