Jenks flexes muscles with MHS

JENKS – Muskogee controlled the game early but in the end, Jenks out-physicaled the Roughers.

The Trojans rallied from a 6-0 deficit on two Preston Soper field goals with 42 unanswered points and a 42-6 verdict here Friday at Hunter Dwelley Stadium.

“We got exactly out of this game what we had in practice this week. We had one good day. So we got exactly what we worked for,” Muskogee coach Josh Blankenship said, his team now 1-5 and 1-2 in District 6A-3 play.

“I don’t know it was complacency, which is ridiculous when we’re 1-4 even though we had a good game against Broken Arrow, or if we were checked out thinking we didn’t have a shot because it was Jenks. By Wednesday we had a great practice, but by Wednesday it was too late.”

That one good quarter was the opening one.

The Roughers went 52 yards in 13 plays, much in the style of the final drive in regulation against Broken Arrow, and got the first of two Soper field goals, a 39-yarder with 2:24 in the opening quarter.

His 30-yarder with 4:26 until halftime made it 6-0.

The Trojans then put together two scores in the final three minutes, taking six plays to go 55 yards, Oklahoma commit Alex Ross going the final 8 yards with 2:31 until halftime.

After a quick three-and-out and a Soper punt, Jenks went 66 yards in nine plays, quarterback Hunter Collins hitting Trey Michaelczewski for 9 yards with 14 seconds left.

On that three-and-out, Muskogee lost running back Bradley McGee.

McGee did not return, his right knee wrapped in ice as he watched in street clothes on the sidelines.

McGee called it a sprain, similar to what he had in the preseason that caused him to miss the opener. He also called it a cheap shot.

“It wasn’t just a good hit, it was on purpose,” he said.

Jenks coach Allan Trimble was asked about it.

“It may have been,” he said. “I won’t know until I see the film.”

The Roughers dodged a bullet on Raundel Cooper’s fumble with 7 seconds to play. Jenks immediately set up for a 40-yard Kevin King field goal attempt which sailed low and to the left.

Ross, who’s been out of action with an injured ankle most of the season, scored two third-quarter touchdowns and left with 106 yards on 15 carries. Trey’Vonne Barr’e had a 43-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and finished with 177 yards on 19 carries. The Trojans finished with 338 yards rushing and a 429-169 yardage edge.

Muskogee quarterback Trevor Jiles threw for 106 yards, four tosses to Aaron Fowler for 61 yards.

Minus McGee, Muskogee had two first downs in the second half as the Trojans defense was sparked by super-size defensive linemen Orion Jones and Ashton Henderson, the two biggest concerns Blankenship had.

“They can completely dismantle what you’re doing in the run game especially when you get in situations where you’re going one on one and when they do that they do good things,” Blankenship said.

“Having seen what they did against Broken Arrow, I wasn’t surprised by what we saw early on. I was especially impressed with both their offensive and defensive line,” Trimble said, his No. 3-ranked team now 5-1 and 3-0.

“When we got those three three-and-outs to start the second half (excluding Jiles’ 29-yard run on a keeper to begin the second series) I think we began to win the field position battle and the momentum.”
