VIAN – Can anyone stop the Vian Wolverines?
The Wilburton Diggers’ answer to that question is no. The Wolverines again showed why they are the No. 1-ranked team in Class 2A with a 75-0 trouncing of the Diggers Thursday night on Vian's senior night.
Vian was able to score just about any way they wanted to. They scored on offense, defense, and special teams.
But it’s been that way in all eight games for the Wolverines, who haven’t had a closer scare than 55-6 in the season opener against Spiro.
Perhaps Vian will get a serious test next week at Hartshorne in what will decide the 2A-6 title.
“That will be a challenge for our team," said Vian head coach Brandon Tyler. "We will have to stay focused and work hard. But when you have a group of seniors like we have, they will work hard."
The game against Wilburton (4-4, 2-2) was put away early. The Diggers received the opening kick but could not move the ball and were forced to punt and that led to the first of nine touchdowns scored by the Wolverines.
The initial possession for Vian started with a 38-yard scamper by Rowdy Simon who was untouched but went out of bounds at the 2-yard line on his own. That allowed the team’s manager, Cole Cato, to get the scoring glory on the next play.
“He’s been with us since kindergarten and we talked coach in to letting him have a play," said Simon.
A memorable play it was.
"It felt pretty great (touchdown), I've been waiting for that my whole life," said Cato.
The Vian defense did not want to be left out of the scoring either. On Wilburton's next possession, quarterback Lane Knight's pass was picked off by Simon who returned the ball 40 yards for another Vian touchdown and with the extra point by Tyler Cortez the lead jumped to 14-0.
Warren Zachary added a 60-yard touchdown scamper and after Cortez's kick it was 21-0. All of this scoring and still over eight minutes left to play in the first quarter.
Vian added scores by the air also. Wolverines quarterback Landon Decker found Tre Locust for a 26-yard touchdown. Zachary added another run of 61 yards for a score. Eric Casey got in the act with a 19 yard touchdown run and a 50 yard punt return for a touchdown, and Simon added a 14- yard score and Locust picked off a Diggers pass for 34 yard touchdown.
The score at the half stood 62-0.
The lone bright spot for Wilburton, coached by former Okay coach Brian Kirkhart, came in the first quarter on a 61-yard pass from Knight to Seth Ezekiel that took the Diggers to the 14-yard line. Other than that play, the Wolverines’ defense only gave up 25 yards. The drive ended on an interception by Rylee Simon.
The second half was played with a continuous clock. Vian added two late scores on runs by Brett Vastine and Greg McIntyre.
Simon led the ground attack with four rushes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
