Wagoner, Porter, Stigler focus on second round of playoffs

Even Stigler coach Chris Risenhoover was in awe.

The coach watched as his junior quarterback Jarret Radford filled the air with 510 yards passing in the Panthers’ 55-48 win against Prague in the opening round of the Class 2A playoffs this past Friday night.

It was a historic night for Risenhoover.

“That’s the best I’ve ever had a kid throw (in one game) in my career as head coach,” Risenhoover said. “I had a kid when I was at Miami who threw for a school-record 408 in the ninth game, but 510 doesn’t happen very often on a high school field.”

The other area teams still alive in the postseason also made some history. Wagoner qualified for the quarterfinals for the fifth consecutive year by beating Jay 35-0, while Porter won its first playoff game ever by defeating Weleetka 38-28.

Both have home playoff games at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. It will be the first time for Porter to make it to the second round.

Risenhoover also was impressed with the seven touchdowns thrown by Radford. He now has completed 173 of 282 passes for 2,889 yards and 31 TDs this season. Radford threw the winning touchdown of 37 yards with four seconds left in the game.

“As far as the ball out of his hand, Jarret throws it as well as any kid I’ve been around,” the Stigler coach said.

Stigler, now 8-3 for the season, plays at Sperry (7-4) in the second round of the playoffs also on Friday after the Pirates upset Sequoyah 28-14.

Wagoner (8-3) will play Oklahoma City Douglass (8-3), a 14-0 upset winner against Class 4A defending state champion Glenpool.

Dale Condict, the Bulldogs’ coach, savors wins now more than ever.

“Who would’ve thought that with two minutes left in the (regular season finale) against Hilldale that we would be at home in the quarterfinals?” he said, referring to Wagoner’s late fumble recovery and game-winning touchdown with eight seconds left in the 14-13 win against the Hornets.

Condict hopes the Bulldogs’ success continues as the have only lost three times at home in the last five years.

“When you’re building a program, it’s something you like to see as you’re trying to sustain a level of success by going to the playoffs and actually winning in the playoffs,” he said. “It’s sure nice for all of us to reap the benefits from all of that hard work.”

Porter coach Ron Coppedge knows his team will need plenty of that hard work this Friday when 10-1 Canton, the No. 2-ranked Class B comes to town. Porter (11-0) is No. 4 in the final Associated Press rankings.

Marcus Scarborough powered the Pirates into the quarterfinal round with his game-high 289 yards rushing on 25 carries and three touchdowns in the 38-28 win against Weleetka and the first-ever second round payoff berth.

“We’ve had a lot of firsts here over the last three years,” Coppedge said. “We’ve got a chance to continue on. Canton is big and fast and we have to play mistake-free football to win the game.”
