Playoff scenarios up in air going into final week

Going into the last week of the regular season, playoff scenarios for area teams still in are as follows:

6A-3

Muskogee (2-6, 2-4) — All’s available is fourth place and a trip to Union next week. The Roughers must win at home against last-place Tulsa Memorial and hope Sand Springs loses to Jenks. If Claremore then loses to Sapulpa, Muskogee wins fourth by virtue of head-to-head against Sand Springs. If Claremore wins, it goes to a tiebreaker in marginal points and Muskogee can clinch with a win of 11 or more points. That margin would also keep Claremore’s victory from hurting them as the Zebras trail Muskogee by six in marginal points.

4A-4

Wagoner (6-3, 4-2)— Realistically, the Bulldogs will advance as the fourth place team if they beat Hilldale and there are no upsets in the district in week 10. Broken Bow hosts Fort Gibson and Sallisaw plays Tulsa Webster. If Broken Bow and Sallisaw both win, Sallisaw and Broken Bow would finish 1-2 in that order. Poteau, sitting in third, plays Muldrow and the Pirates hold the tiebreaker advantage over Wagoner in head-to-head. A loss by Sallisaw or Poteau could push the Bulldogs as high as second place.

Hilldale (5-4, 3-3) — The Hornets must beat Wagoner. A loss ends their season. However, a win does not guarantee a postseason berth unless Poteau defeats Muldrow. Should Poteau lose, the marginal points difference between Hilldale’s win and Poteau’s loss must favor Hilldale by eight or more points.

3A-4

Checotah (7-2, 4-2) — Is in a three-way tie for second with Roland and Okmulgee with Roland owning the tiebreaker over both by virtue of wins over both. Should the Wildcats beat or lose by two points or less at four-loss Hugo, the Wildcats get no worse than third. Checotah has head-to-head and marginal points over Okmulgee (17 points) and could host a first-round game and finish second with a win and a Bristow upset of Roland.

2A-6

Stigler (7-2, 5-1) — The Panthers got a boost in their playoff possibilities Friday. Besides winning 40-6 against Antlers, Spiro defeated Hartshorne 21-6, pushing Stigler into a first place tie with Valliant. If Stigler and Valliant win next week, Stigler advances as the district champion because it beat Valliant 34-21 this season. Should the Panthers lose by 15 or more and Spiro and Hartshorne win by 15 or more, Stigler slips to fourth. Stigler plays at home against Panama (4-5, 3-3).

2A-8

Sequoyah (9-0, 6-0) — Won the district title with its 51-18 win against Adair. The Indians are likely to play Sperry in the first round of the playoffs.

Vian (8-1, 5-1) — Has wrapped up the runner-up spot with the 14-7 win against Keys. Vian is tied in the standings with Colcord, but the Wolverines have the advantage with its 24-6 win in their head-to-head tiebreaker. Vian may get Pawhuska in the first round.

A-6

Gore (7-2, 6-2) — The Pirates are in the playoffs after beating Haileyville 7-0 on Friday. The only suspense that remains is whether Gore will be third or fourth in the district in Thursday’s showdown at home against Savanna. A Pirates’ win and they are third or a loss drops them to fourth place.

B-4

Porter (9-0, 7-0) — Has clinched the school’s first-ever district championship and will open the playoffs against Weleetka, the fourth-place team from District B-3.

C-4

Midway (5-4, 5-1) — Has clinched a playoff spot and will advance as the second-place team by beating Claremore Christian. The Chargers, who would play Deer Creek-Lamont in the fist round of the playoffs, can still clinch the tiebreaker should they lose by less than 10 points. They can finish no worse than third in any tiebreaker.
