HASKELL — In a battle for first place in District A-7, it was Tonkawa which came out on top, 27-13.
“It was every bit the war he thought it would be,” Tonkawa coach Mike Kirtley said. “We came over here in a hostile environment and we are just happy to get out of here.”
After leading at the half 14-7, Kirtley reiterated to his team that Haskell will not be a pushover.
“We just said ‘Now do you believe us?’” Kirtley said. “Because I think they (Haskell) were more physical than us in the first half. We told them you have to be ready for a battle because they are a tough team.”
The Buccaneers (5-0, 4-0) contained Haymaker running back Jarel Draper, as he only accumulated 36 yards on 14 attempts with one touchdown.
The lone highlight for the Haymakers (3-2, 3-1) was receiver Chiante Jackson, as he had 107 receiving yards on three catches.
“I think we played good defensively we made some stupid penalties and mistakes,” said Kirtley, “But as far as hitting and going to the ball I thought we played good defensively.”
Haskell quarterback Jordan Pendergraft finished 7 of 16 for 92 yards, and was sacked three times.
