STILLWATER — New Oklahoma State baseball coach Josh Holliday made his first big move as the head coach of the Cowboys by announcing Rob Walton as his pitching coach on Monday.
The 49-year old Walton spent the last 14 years at Oral Roberts University and was the Golden Eagles’ head man for the past nine. He, like Holliday, played at Oklahoma State and was a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher from 1983-86.
Walton was being rumored as one of the top candidates to succeed Frank Anderson, who was fired after nine years as the head coach of the Cowboy program. Anderson didn’t have a pitching coach on his staff, as he ended up worked with the pitching staff as he was a former pitching coach at Texas before becoming the OSU head coach.
In his nine seasons at the helm of ORU, Walton compiled a 365-167 (.686) record and was named the Summit League Coach of the Year five times. Under his direction, the Golden Eagles were an NCAA Tournament team each year and produced five seasons with 40 or more wins, including a 50-win campaign in 2004.
