Sooner coaches get pay raises

— ARDMORE — Offensive coordinators Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell each received a $20,000 raise and will be paid $350,000 next season under contract changes approved Tuesday by Oklahoma’s board of regents.

The raises came amid a series of changes to coaches’ contracts in all sports at the end of the fiscal year. No changes were made to the contract of head coach Bob Stoops, whose deal has automatic annual raises.

Among the other football assistants, the next biggest raises were $15,000 for running backs coach Cale Gundy and $13,400 for defensive tackles coach Jackie Shipp.

The regents also approved a one-year contract extension for women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale to keep her in charge of the Sooners through the 2017-18 season. It includes an increase in her built-in annual raise from $20,000 to $30,000 each season. She is set to make $1.02 million next season, plus bonuses.

Softball coach Patty Gasso, who led her team to the finals of the Women’s College World Series, and baseball coach Sunny Golloway each had their contracts extended by two years to run through the 2017 season.

Both gymnastics head coaches also got significant raises after sustained success.

K.J. Kindler, who has led the Sooners women to the NCAA national meet the past three seasons, got a three-year contract extension and a $60,000 raise. Her deal now runs through the 2018 season and is worth $190,000 per year.

Men’s gymnastics coach Mark Williams got a two-year extension and a $56,000 raise to bump his annual pay to $191,000 after his team finished second at the NCAA national meet. The Sooners have either won the national title or finished second 10 of the past 11 seasons under Williams.

University President David Boren pointed out that although the raises were granted on the same day the university raised tuition prices, the athletic department is not only self-sufficient but will provide $5.7 million to the academic side — a total he believes to be either the most or second-most at universities across the country.
