Late announcer to be honored

— DALLAS — The National Football Foundation announced Thursday that the late University of Oklahoma broadcasting legend Bob Barry, Sr., will receive the organization’s Chris Schenkel Award.

Barry, a 50-year broadcasting veteran in the Sooner State, died on Oct. 30, 2011 at 80. A native of Oklahoma City, Barry began his career at KNOR in Norman in 1956 and began calling OU games in 1961 until 1972. He was to Oklahoma State from 1973-90 and returned to Norman in 1991 until his retirement in 2011.

The award, first presented in 1996, seeks to recognize a sports broadcaster who has enjoyed a long and distinguished career broadcasting college football with direct ties to a specific university.

The award will be presented at the NFF Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 in New York City.
