Muskogee has lost a tireless public servant.
Frank Medearis was an attorney. He served for a time as an assistant district attorney. He also had served as city attorney for Muskogee. But his work was far from the most significant aspect of his life.
Friends recall Medearis as a man with a contagious laugh who was warm and full of fun. He loved to entertain.
Medearis was also a man of talent with a finely honed sense of whimsy. He performed both serious and comic roles in Muskogee Little Theatre productions. One of his most memorable was his breakout role in the play “Ruthless,” in which he played a grandmother named Sylvia St. Croix. Medearis brought howls of laughter with the line “Let me be Frank.”
More importantly, Medearis was a man who cared. He was passionate in his concern for his community.
That passion showed in his volunteer work. He taught literacy at the Muskogee Public Library. He volunteered with the Muskogee Education Foundation, Lake Area United Way, the Muskogee Nonprofit Resource Center and the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee. He served on Kids’ Space Child Advocacy Board. He served meals with Meals on Wheels. His willingness to help seemed to know no limit.
Medearis often joked that he was happy as long as he could be cute and fun. He was that. But he will be remembered because he was also so much more.
Services for Medearis will be 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2130 W. Okmulgee Ave.
