Keep campaign on the issues

— Major party nominees in the 2nd Congressional District race say they will run on the issues leading up to the Nov. 6 general election.

That would be a wonderful change of pace for the election process.

Democratic nominee Rob Wallace and Republican nominee Markwayne Mullin both say they will fight it out on the issues.

Something has been lost in the election process.

Voters are not being given the information they need to form quality opinions before elections.

The loss of civility in any campaign hurts both candidates and voters.

Candidates who choose to go dirty deflect from their qualifications.

Voters are not allowed to see if those candidates are really qualified for the job.

They are left with a schoolyard confrontation instead of real debate on real issues.

Saying your opponent lacks in some form of character really only shows your lack of character.

The problem is, with the United States divided in so many ways, some voters get lost in the rhetoric and allow candidates to substitute manure for substance.

We encourage the candidates in this race and in every race to meet and debate the issues in front of the voters.

And stick to the issues.

Tell us why you are qualified.

Tell us what you are going to do — exactly what you are going to do and how you are going to accomplish it.

Elections should not just be about which party you support.

Whoever wins this race is responsible for the entire district and every voter — not just their party supporters.

Voters should hammer all candidates with specific questions and demand specific answers.

It is what’s best for candidate and voter.
