Mayor Chris Doherty of Scranton, Pa., lit the fire. The question is will President Obama and Vice President Biden, a Scranton native, pick up the torch and run on raising the minimum wage?
The mayor exposed the stinkiest scandal of the Obama administration, a federal minimum wage of only $7.25 an hour.
With a budget $16 million in the red, the mayor cut the pay of cops, firefighters, and other city workers to the $7.25 minimum. Only a few states, like Washington’s $8.55 an hour, mandate a higher wage than federal law. Oklahoma keeps its redneck reputation with a $7.25 minimum.
Here’s what’s wrong with a slave driver’s delight of $7.25:
• It should be a $10 living wage. Adjusted for inflation, that would equal the 1968 minimum wage.
• A minimum wage is a poverty wage.
• $7.25 isn’t an honest wage because bosses cut hours to less than 40 a week.
• It’s a war on powerless women because a majority of minimum wage workers are women.
• The federal minimum wage hasn’t been raised since 2009.
• Most affected by any raise would be the retail sector, Wal-Mart, shops, malls and restaurants (tipped workers still make $2.13 an hour).
• A rising tide raises all boats.
• President Harry Truman said, “Republicans are for the minimum wage, the more minimum the better.”
If Obama and Biden want middle class votes, they will tell bosses to “shove it” and back a $10 living wage for the hardest workers in America.
