THE PEOPLE SPEAK — Don’t put more tax money into study

— In Sunday’s paper the article “Councilors approve $25K for market studies,” stated the city was going to spend $25,000, which is $6,000 more than the average Muskogee resident earns annually, to conduct another study.

The majority of this money will be directed to perform a supermarket analysis for a “possible” grocery store using the results of another study of “opportunity gaps,” which indicated we lost 138 million because citizens of Muskogee shopped at grocery stores outside of the city. Where are they getting these numbers?

According to the latest census numbers, our population is approximately 39,000 with an average income of $19,000 annually, 25 percent of which live below the poverty level. If we look at the individuals over 18, each person would have to be spending $390 in grocery stores in other towns every month. With gas prices and the poverty level does this make sense?

I think we could find a better way to spend hard-earned tax dollars than paying another “out of town firm” to do one more study.
