A free society must abide by the spirit of those freedoms, even when that spirit can create harm in a way unintended by the framers of the Constitution.
As a private organization the Boy Scouts of America has the right to determine its membership policy.
The BSA recently affirmed its policy to exclude gays.
Government can’t and should not intervene with that policy.
Government should not be in the business of funding any organization which discriminates, either. In order to remain a free society, government must be blind to people’s race, gender, age and sexual orientation.
Government can’t discriminate.
This nation has a long history of denying rights to its citizens under the guise of the sign of the times.
Only white males were allowed to be truly free when the Constitution was drafted.
It wasn’t until decades and decades later that it recognized the rights of people of color and women.
Government should not intervene until discrimination infringes on another person’s rights.
The right to join the Boy Scouts is not guaranteed.
The right for the Boy Scouts to have a discriminatory policy is not to be infringed upon, either.
The BSA might believe they are trying to protect Scouts from pedophiles. It is a mistaken attitude to believe all gays are pedophiles.
Homosexuality is not the same thing as pedophilia. To equate the two is just wrong.
The BSA offers many valuable lessons to young men.
It’s a shame tolerance is not one of them.
