Five founding members of Save the Illinois River deserve their induction into the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Hall of Fame.
The five, who will be inducted into the hall on Sunday, are:
• Kathy Tibbits, a University of Tulsa Law School graduate, is known for her unbridled enthusiasm and the music that tells the story of the Illinois River.
• Dr. Glen Sizemore, a retired Northeastern State University psychology professor and longtime treasurer for STIR, has been an Illinois River advocate since 1944.
• Jack Spears, a Tahlequah city councilor and Public Works Authority member, operates Arrowhead Resort and helped charter STIR as a not-for-profit conservation organization.
• Ed Fite, whose existence has been linked with the river since he was 5, is an Oklahoma Water Resource Board member. He has served since 1983 as administrator for the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission.
• Ed Brocksmith, a former scenic rivers commissioner, has worked closely during the years with the media on Illinois River issues and water conservation.
The community is lucky to have such strong advocates for the preservation of the Illinois River, its tributaries and Tenkiller Lake.
