OMHOF/ OKPOP deal makes sense

— The alliance Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame board members have forged with backers of the proposed Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture promises good things.

Through the collaboration with the Oklahoma Historical Society, OMHOF will gain access to a broader and deeper pool of exhibits than its current collection.

“We will be providing exhibit support for the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame,” said Jeff Moore, OKPOP project director. “This is an opportunity where we can take the resources we have and share those with the hall of fame and develop future programming and exhibits.”

This is exciting.

The OMHOF should look to get these displays rotating through its display space as soon as possible.

“Through this partnership, all of a sudden we have the opportunity to bring in exhibits we wouldn’t have otherwise,” OMHOF President Jim Blair said.

Changing shows and exhibits are a big part of the draw at museums. Even if you have seen the museum, when a new exhibit comes you have a motivation to return.

Of course, OKPOP backers could realize an advantage for their effort as well. The alliance could foster additional support for the passage of a bond to fund the building of the popular culture museum in Tulsa’s Brady Arts District.

But alliances also serve OMHOF’s interests. The hall of fame already has planned to move its induction ceremony and concert out of Muskogee because of poor attendance. Reaching out to a broader audience and finding allies makes sense given the hall of fame’s financial difficulties.

This arrangement promises benefits to both organizations.
